Home Gardening Tip #1 - Start Small And Grow

For my wife and I home gardening has become such a great hobby but there was a time not to long ago we didn't really have a clue about gardening.

Even though we didn't really know a lot about gardening we had the desire and a couple of gardening friends who advised us to start small so as not to become overwhelmed and lose that initial passion. That was probably the best tip we have gotten from friends.

We actually started our first vegetable garden in containers with just a few tomato plants, strawberries and we even planted potatoes in containers as well.

This allowed us to start gardening even though we had no yard to garden in, just a driveway and front steps but it worked and then we really had the itch to by a home with a backyard so we could start a regular vegetable garden.

Even once we bought a home and started a garden in our backyard we started small, with a plot only 4 feet by 12 feet and grew tomatoes, potatoes, corn, peas, beans and some peppers.

We also continued container gardening and don't plan to stop any time soon. We have also increased our vegetable garden a little each year since we started gardening.

Who needs a big property to grow a garden

This is a great little video that will show you that property like our first 5 or so homes didn't have any property to dig in so we started growing things in pots. Containers of varying size depending on what we planned to grow. Heck we even grew potatoes in a container.

Containers gardens are great to start indoors then move outside as the weather gets nicer, plus you can move them from place to place if they get too much sun or not enough. Very flexible.

Home Gardening Tip #2 - Starting A Herb Garden

Cooking with garden herbs

Kitchen Herb GardenBefore I started watching the Food Network I used a few dried herbs once in a while but once I saw how the chefs there used fresh herbs I had to give them a try.

I tried buying herbs at the beginning but found most of the time they went bad before I had a chance to use them. The ones I did get to use were some good and gave the ole taste buds a real treat.

That awesome experience led to me start both an indoor herb garden right in my kitchen and one in the yard for dried herbs.

My Kitchen Herb Garden

We have two windows in our kitchen so we get early morning sunlight in our east window and then get afternoon sun coming in the south window.

If I see my herbs looking a little spindly I will move them from one window to the other to get more direct sunlight.

We can cut off herbs for a meal and the plant just keeps on growing and producing more and more herbs.

Herbs in Our Kitchen Herb Garden

We eat a lot of chicken and beef but had never used herbs. Once we tried herb encrusted chicken we had to have those particular herbs in both our herb gardens.

Rosemary, Chives, Parsley, Marjoram, and Sage

A Few Herbs You Could Grow

Growing herbs is great. You can use them in your cooking. They are so much better than any herbs you buy at the grocery store. Herbs smell great so they can be grown indoors as well. They also look great in your garden and if you grow perennials you want some that are in this video.

Home Gardening Tip #3 - Creating Raised Beds

Limited space doesn't have to mean you can't have a garden. Having a bad back doesn't mean you can't have a garden. Being limited physically doesn't necessarily mean you can't have a garden.

A raised bed garden may be exactly what you need.

We have two, they were here when we bought the place. I grow strawberries in one and Jenny grows Petunias and Clematis. We like them so much we are thinking of build a couple more. It's nice to be able to sit on the edge of the raised bed so we don't have to bend or kneel too much.

At one home we lived in, of course there was no yard, but we put a raised flower bed along the end of the driveway.
