Bacon butties? Surely that's something rude?
There's nothing rude about the bacon butty! A butty is Northern English slang for a sandwich!
A good butty is much more than 2 slices of bread and some filling, and much less sophisticated than something you would buy in a deli. You won't find posh cheese or rocket salad in a butty, but you will find lots of butter, hearty bread and lashings of calories.
The bacon butty is, in my opinion, the king of butties! This marriage of bread, bacon and sauce has been responsible for many a dieter and vegetarian for falling off the wagon, and responsible for restoring many a hangover. Yes really! Scientists came up with the formula for making the best bacon butty! A research panel made over 700 bacon butties to discover this, with a research panel of 50 volunteers. They tested different types and cuts of bacon, cooking techniques, cooking temperatures, oil used and thickness and type of bread.

After much debate they came up with this formula:
N = C + {fb (cm) . fb (tc)} + fb (Ts) + fc . ta

N = is the force of newtons needs to break the cooked bacon.

fb is the function of the bacon type

fc is the function of the condiment/filling effect

Ts is the serving temperature
-
tc is the cooking time
-
ta is the time or duration of application of the condiment/filling

cm is the cooking method

C is the Newtons required to break uncooked bacon

The right bread for bacon butties
bread and bacon are a match in heaven!
White or brown, the right bread for a bacon butty must be thickly cut into doorsteps, fresh and home made tasting. For a proper authentic butty though, a soft and crusty white roll is the best!

Choosing the right bacon and cooking it the correct way is essential to bacon butty enjoyment! I like unsmoked back bacon, preferably organic free range as I like to eat happy pigs. Whatever your choice, streaky, cured or smoked - the bacon must be cooked so the edges are crispy. Flabby soft bacon and overly chewy is a no no. The smell and the crispy texture of the bacon is very important, something the scientists who found the formula for a truly satisfying bacon butty (see above!) discovered.
There are many ways to cook bacon, you could lay it on a skillet, put into a frying pan, oven bake or grill it. I prefer mine grilled on a medium high heat, because that way it gets the edges nice and crispy.

Assembling the the best bacon butty
So you have bought (or baked!) your perfect soft white bread roll, buttered it and have your condiments ready for application! Take four rashers of crispy bacon, fresh off the grill and lovingly place them inside your roll. Squeeze on your sauce of choice, and take a big bite. Mmmmmmm!

This bacon/egg waffle combo looks delicious! But waffles are just not hearty enough for a butty. Ciabatta, panini, brioche or bread with herbs and nuts aren't either! No fancy bread.
