The need for bad credit repair has risen in epic proportions in the last 10-20 years. There are many reasons for this. One being the importance placed on good credit and a good credit score. Lenders are constantly raising the bar making it harder to qualify for a mortgage or even a car loan. The rise in bankruptcies doesn't help matters at all, although recent changes in the law should cause people to think twice before proceeding with the big "B". (see bottom of page)

The biggest problem that consumers face is that it takes very little to ruin your credit and it can happen practically over night. Restoring your credit in the aftermath can be a long and arduous process if you don't know what you are doing. The biggest hurdle in your way is the fact that the slightest slip up can take you back to the beginning.

The credit repair industry is a mine field of misleading programs such as this. You always need to research companies before you give them any money or commit to anything. Call the better business bureau, look them up on the internet. You need to be especially wary of debt consolidation and debt relief companies. Not that they are all bad, it's just that unfortunately there are a lot of scams going in this industry. You must be careful.

That is why I recommend, if at all possible, you try to fix your credit on your own. I know that sounds intimidating but it isn't rocket science. There are a lot of very affordable credit restoration courses that take you through the process step by step.

There are some that even have pre-written dispute letters for you although I recommend using hand written unique versions. The credit companies have seen these "cookie cutter" letters and do not take them seriously.

Control and Get Out of Debt

After you have your credit reports and have identified the problems that need to be corrected you need to look at your budget and financial situation. Actually, this should be the first step, but since you are here reading this, I am going to assume that you already have credit problems and the cause of these problems doesn't matter at this point in time.

Unless, you are currently in a financial bind and your credit situation is in jeopardy of becoming worse. If this is the case you need to stop and see what measures can be taken to remedy your current economic challenges.

Let's assume that you haven't already done the obvious.

You need to make a list of all your monthly expenditures and see where you can make some cuts. Maybe you can get bye without the platinum cable package and downgrade to the basic. You might save only save 30 bucks a month but every bit helps. Some times drastic measures are needed to achieve one's goals.
