The Bad Number 69

Ranked #690 in Culture & Society, #16,414 overall

Will the number 69 harm your children?

PG-13 is defined as A trademark used for a movie rating indicating that admission will be granted to persons of all ages but that parental guidance is suggested in the case of children under the age of 13. (Quote from Answers.com)

I created at Zazzle an Christmas Invitation with an Alien on it and added some template fields.

I wrote as default "Route 69" into the address field.

When I clicked on "post for sale" a message came up telling me The number "69" is rated PG-13.

In which world do we live where someone thinks kids need to be protected from seeing a number and that I have to ask Content Review for permission to post my product?
I wonder why 66 is not on the list too, you don't need much imagination to see something "oh so shocking" in it ...

It raised many questions, would be great if you answer some!

Need kids under 13 to be proteced from seeing the number 69?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Sure, it gives them nightmares

Aquavel says:

If they are shopping on Zazzle, they definitely need to be protected from seeing this number in print. Who knows what fantasies it could possibly conjure up?! The Zazzle infringement team needs to relax.

Othercat says:

Yes. And when you're teaching them to count, make sure to go from 68 straight to 70.

Silly Question

Tipi says:

I think generations have established its safety.

Morgannafay says:

geeeze Zazzle is getting scary in it's old age. LOL I hope I read on to find this was a software mistake with Zaz's filters because censoring a number is down right frightening.

Swisstoons says:

Several of my Zazzle product titles and descriptions contain the word, "sexy" in the most playful way anyone could imagine. I was annoyed when Zazzle insisted I reclassify those products as PG-13. Then it occured to me; anyone who'd be interested in buying one of those products, innocent as they were, would probably have set his or her viewer rating to PG-13 or R when he or she created an account. Those wishing not to see the word, "sexy" while at Zazzle would've set their ratings accordingly. Too many of you sound like you think you're defending "free speech," when this is not a free speech issue at all, nor of true censorship. It's a business decision, and one I support. What well-run company wants to chance offending its customer base? And I say this as someone who once sold cartoons to Penthouse Magazine on a regular basis.

missprinteditions says:

Kids under 13? - how did a phrase like that make it past the censors?

cffutah says:

keep kids as kids, some things they surely don't need to know.

pawpaw911 says:

I don't know. I'm just worried that he number police will find out I am reading this, and come and arrest me.

Luv2help says:

Another ridiculous thing to worry about if you ask me. If a child is old enough to ask they are old enough to know, but the "explainer" needs to answer in the most rudimentary of ways, then build up the answer as the child builds up their question. Stop explaining when the questions stop and you will not have over done it.

JoyKitten says:

Of the current responses, I most agree with the comments by PaulOnBooks.

WordCustard says:

Are birthday parties cancelled for 69 year olds? How unfair!

BuddyBink says:

Unless you attach some meaning to a number it should have no meaning beyond what it is, a number. If I have 69 cents or 69 dollars or 69 Squidoo lenses, do those 69's have negative connections? People will apply positive or negative messages to just about anything.

KimGiancaterino says:

The P.C. Police are at it again.

helikettle says:

I'll be 69 next year - does this mean that I'll have to skip straight over to 70? :(

EditionH says:

I always appreciated Zazzle for protecting their sellers from legal consequences in case they use copyright or trademark protected material accidentally.

The 69 case is however completely alienating to say the least. I wonder whether US schools manage to teach maths without using this figure?

akarki says:

those kids probably would be laughing to know that for they that number is forbidden, i am wandering what is the math lesson mention that number...

PaulOnBooks says:

If a child under 13 knows enough to snigger at the number 69 then it's too late. If he or she doesn't know the meaning then it's a waste of time "protecting".

Will children under 13 understand what 69 can mean?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Sure, they know more than you think

Tipi says:

Yuppers, news of crazy things travel quickly!

Morgannafay says:

They get it from their goofy friends, then giggle about it. It's harmless and half of them probably don't even know what it means. They won't admit that to their friends. I've had debates with friends before the age of 13 on why is that, and what happens in regards to sex or where babies come from. Some are funny, outlandish and bring back some fond childhood memories looking back on all the conversations and giggles.

Luv2help says:

It depends on if they ride the bus to school!

BuddyBink says:

Of course.

KimGiancaterino says:

Oh yeah.

pussycat says:

I guess nowadays some thirteen year olds could teach me a thing or two ....

Zut_Moon says:

Probably ..but not under 5 ...

nevets_sdoow says:

I sure did.

fanfreluche says:

They do, from other kids, street knowledge...

nancycarol says:

Unfortunately, they probably do! They learn these things far too early in life. But again, how many things do we have to delete from our numbers or alphabet to satisfy the censors? Where is the line drawn? When we have total mind control, will that be enough? GADS!

Pastiche says:

I think they'll have some "street" knowledge.

Waxing-Lyrical says:

More than likely!

Showpup says:

It means lots of things... depending on where the numeral is used.

Frischy says:

I would like to say no, but I think it is possible that they are exposed to this concept in middle school these days....not from adults, but from their peers. Our kids today have much greater exposure to sexual themes due to content on radio, movies and popular music which is all highly sexualized. But, really, what difference does the 13th birthday make, if they are exposed to all of this at age 11 or 12?

Silly Question

TomMaybrier says:

Every child will be different but calling it out like this will only make them curious - Zazzle needs to relax a bit.

PaulOnBooks says:

Yes, all children are born with the stain of original sin and a deep knowledge of ancillary practices in the area of human relattionships. (Not how I'd normally say it!)

ElleDeeEsse says:

Some children will know that was the year their parents were born, others will know that is how old Grandma is, some may guess that's how many jellybeans are in a packet

lisadh says:

Kids grow up fast these days, but I think most kids under 13 probably just know 69 is a number between 68 and 70.

NYtoSCimjustme says:

Only if they are taught it... I can't believe how twisted some censorship gets

Razzle dazzle Zazzle is starting to frazzle. I love 'em anyway though. Still, the bigger they get, the buggier their filters. Hope you got through to a human being and that they reinstated your products. Fun Monkey Brain lens!

Sounds like they had a really really lazy filter set up where there was a correlation between the number 69 and other content on pages equaling out to a PG-13 page. In stead of trying to make something heuristic or adaptive they just blanket state 69 = PG-13.

I really enjoyed my stay here! HEH, I'm the 59th like! Come on 69, almost there. :)

Really, like I said in the first debate module, I really hope the cheese hasn't fallen this far off of zazzle's cracker. Even when you look at 69's other more...sexy meaning, it's not a bad thing. Could be worse, could mean something racist or hurtful to another group.

I teach math and 69 will inevitably come up. I have never goofed up on that, nor heard any snickers. Go figure. If adults only knew what 4-20 meant....now that's a "bad" number.

Any number can hold a significance. Same symbol can be perceived as “good” or “bad” by different people living in different cultures.
Let’s take the number 13 for example. For some people this means bad luck while others see it as a sign of fortune.
69 is a number like any other number. If the adults with their perverted and creative minds see another thing in it and keep it away from the children and threat the number 69 as a “taboo” number then this will add weight to it and it will eventually become a “bad” number.
Just like the middle finger is just another finger but due to our association with it being “bad” it has become an insult.
Children are born without preconceived ideas. It is the adults that are inserting these ideas into their little forming minds.
If we begin treating a number as being “bad” then it will become bad!
Like someone else in here said, should we count from 68 to 70 from now on? Like some hotels do with their room numbers?
