Bad Cat - Good Kitty, Terra the Terrible Tabby Cat (NOT)
Ranked #2,150 in Pets & Animals, #55,449 overall | Donates to TLC Animal Shelter
Meet Terra Catta Nosa, aka Terra the Tabby Cat
My soft fur has brown, black and tan stripes and dots, the classic tabby cat markings. It's very thick and smooth. I have a patch of white at my collar-neck and a lovely tan belly. I have the genuine letter "M" marking on my forehead, and I also have a cute pink nose.
Well, actually Dad says my nose color is terra cotta, and Mom agrees. They both think my nose is particularly cute, so I can say that with confidence.
My wonderful pink nose helped me to get a new name -- more on that later, though. For now you should know my first home was in a house full of college students and dogs. Or, as some of my feline friends might say, hell on earth.
After awhile there, I lived in a halfway home for a few months, and that place had a huge dog, too. I had a hard time trying to adapt and I was very lonely. I needed attention and all I had for companionship was a cat-chasing giant dog named Spooky. She and I were home alone all day long, and she chased me all over that house. Is it any wonder I had a bad case of kitty cabin fever by the time I was 2 years old?
Pussycat Poll
Do You Own a Cat or Does a Cat Own You?
I've had many cats in my life. Most I raised from kittens to full grown, but Terra was an adoption that started when she was 2 years old. She's now 8 and has won over even our old man Sparky who's 16. She knows he is the boss of the house even though she is younger, has front claws and outweighs him by 5 pounds. The photo above shows Terra and Sparky in a rare cuddle, shortly after they both made a 6 hour auto trip from Pennsylvania to Vermont to visit their vacation home - our retirement home.
Terra's adjustment went well when she joined our family and I would consider adopting a shelter cat in the future.
What about your cats?

Terra's Tale - Good Cat, not a Bad Kitty
How Terra the Tabby Cat Found a Forever Home
My life started out okay. I was a happy-go-lucky kitten filled with playfulness, wide-eyed wonder and surrounded by lots of attention, About 6 months after I found my first home things started to get ... difficult. After a year of turbulent moves and some really scary situations, I finally found the home where I belong.
This is my life story so far - I hope it's just the beginning of a loooonnnng time with my artist-parents and feline brother.
I was born not far from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, in 2004 My first "family" was actually a group of college students. My parent-guys, Andrew and his brother Pete, missed their pets back home in Berks county, near the Pennsylvania Dutch Amish region, so when a friend told them my kitten brothers, sisters and I were looking for new homes they came to see us and I got chosen as the lucky one. Or so I thought. Read on ... my story gets a bit harrowing in the next chapter.
Terra is a Peace Loving Cat
Cat Collar with Peace Signs
Peace Signs Cat Collar--

I've lived in some places that seemed like war zones to a small cat. Cats are peaceful critters - so give peace a chance and wear a peace collar, cool cat. I've made peace with my dog friends and I've won over Sparky the timid tom who lives in my home.
Terra the Tabby, Life - Chapter 2
My first move to a new home, from western to eastern Pennsylvania
As the months went on, I grew from a kitten to a young girl tabby cat. Andrew and Maggie-Mom took me to the vet for my routine immunizations. I also got "fixed" while I was there. I never thought I was broken, but Maggie-Mom arranged for surgery so I would not have kittens. She wanted to be sure I would be happy and healthy and not have to worry about trying to take care of an unplanned family. I guess it was for the best but I think I would have been a great and loving mother. But that's another story ...
Being at the hospital to have that surgery was a little scary, but then my family came to take me home. I was very happy to see them, and to leave the veterinary hospital. After a few days I felt fine and life was good again. Or so I thought.
One day Andrew decided to go home to eastern PA to visit his mom for the holidays. Over the winter break, Andew decided to take a semester off from school. We stayed with his mom and their BIG chocolate lab named Spooky. Spooky liked cats - I mean she liked to chase and tease cats. She never hurt me, but Spooky was HUGE and her idea of fun was to corner me in the dining room or under the bed when Maggie-mom or Andrew weren't at home.
Life with Big Dogs - A Cat's Nightmare
Terra the Terrified Gets Some Bad News

Every day living in the house with Spooky the big dog was tense and stressful for me. I tried to escape from Spooky by climbing the draperies in the dining room. But there was no way out. I tried to dig my way out of the house through the carpet near the kitchen door. Again, no escape. I thought I would end up as a dog treat one day.
This went on for months and I was anxious and upset and acting out by scratching stuff. I wanted to play outside but the neighbors didn't like me visiting their gardens, so I was confined to the house. I wanted attention, but everyone was gone all day and sometimes at night, too. Life was looking bleak, but I was grateful to have a safe, warm home and food.
Then winter turned to spring, and Maggie decided it was time to sell the house. She started painting and fixing up every room. Strangers came to see our home, and I liked the company.
One day Maggie-Mom said the house was sold and she would be moving to a new home. I was worried that there would be more big dogs or cranky neighbors, but as it turned out my future was far worse.
I was not invited to move to the new home. I was going to an adoption place (the Humane Society) and would have to start over with a new family - if I was lucky enough to find one.
Terra is Brilliant
- No, REALLY. She's a very smart Kitty. She learns very quickly, communicates vocally, and has a herding instinct like a dog. She's fiercely protective of our home and her companion Sparky the timid tomcat.
Meet My Human Adoptive Parents: Lee and Doug
They're Mom and Dad to me ... and they're angels
My parent humans, Doug (Dad) and Lee (Mom) love cats and dogs. Lucky for me they especially love cats and don't yet have a dog. Before I came to live with them they had three cats - Ebony and her two kids, Misty and Sparky. A few months before I met them, Mom and Dad were sad and missing a cat in their family. Ebony passed away in early 2005. (You can read about Ebony, the little black cat, in a lens written by my Mom Lee aka Pastiche.)Mom and Dad were very sad when they lost Ebony to cancer in March that year. They considered adopting a new cat, or a dog, but they weren't ready to add a new pet to their home until the weather was warm. A few months later, I found out I was being evicted from Maggie-Mom's house. I was going to relocate to the Humane Society because cats were banished from my halfway home. Fortunately for us all, Fate intervened. Maggie-Mom mentioned to Lee-Mom how badly she felt about my situation and suddenly I had a new home with Lee and Doug. I moved in with Doug and Lee in late June, 2005 and we've all been together through good times and rough patches since then.
I'm a Copy Cat, and I know CAD
Terra helps Doug with his CAD work

The first winter I lived in my forever home with Mom and Dad, Doug was working at home. I spent many cold days napping on his desk, keeping warm between the computer and the copier. It was nice to have company and keep cozy in the office.
Outdoor Cat Playground
Indoor Cats Can Enjoy the Outdoors in a Safe Play Shelter
The animals who visit our yard and garden dropped deer ticks everywhere and those ticks hitchhiked on my fur into our home. That caused some big problems, so Mom and Dad decided I had to stay indoors so everyone could stay healthy and safe. I was sad about staying inside, but if I had one of these cool playgrounds for cats I could go outdoors on the deck.

I really like nature more than anything else in the world. If I had my way I'd spend most of my time outside near the birdfeeder. I don't eat the birds, I watch them.. I'm confined to indoor living now because I kept attracting deer ticks that would hop off around the house and bite Mom. Mom and Dad think one of these cool outdoor play houses for cats might make my life pure bliss once again
Duel Debate Module
Terra wore a bell collar with a safety release latch when she was an outdoor cat. She sometimes wears a decorative collar now that she's an indoor cat. When we travel with her in the car or truck, she wears a safety harness with her ID and rabies tag. We like to keep her loosely connected to her leash so she can move around the cabin instead of staying confined in a cat cage for 6 hours when we travel from Pennsylvania to our second home in Vermont.
Should cats should wear collars?

Cats need to wear a safety collar at all times, inside or outdoors.
RenaissanceWoman2010 says:
If cats could get lost, it is important for them to wear identification. Though my girls are strictly indoor cats, when they travel with me I always worry about one of them somehow getting away from me. I would be heartbroken if one of my cats was lost and could not be returned to me due to lack of ID (microchip and/or collar tag).
elynmac says:
Yes - if they get loose people will know how to return them.
TravelingRae says:
When I lived in one location, I never bothered with collars, but now that I travel around I realise just how vitally important they are. The cats will get used to them and you can be assured that there is a way for them to get home. Remember, it's easier to check a tag on a collar than a microchip.
BigGirlBlue says:
We only use a collar/harness when we take the cats on vacation. I don't think there is an absolute answer but I think a collar is warranted at times.
Frankster says:
I need a 3rd choice. Safety collars outside for sure and they should NOT have bells on them. They may save birds but they also are a sure way to get a cat hurt or killed -- they tell a predator where the cat is. I don't think indoor-only cats need to wear them if they aren't in the habit of getting out.
DaveStone13 says:
Safety colors outdoors are a must. Cats curiosity can carry them into dangerous spots they can't get out of. And they do get used to them, like so many other accommodations they make for living with people.
RitaK says:
I wish you had a third option. We live in the country with several kitties and we would love to have them wear cute little collars with noisy little bells so that the birds could fly before the cats could sneak up on them! However, that is not to be. Cats are way smarter than collars! Three days is max that the collar stays on. But I would say yes...for the birds!
Cats don't need collars indoors or outside.
FlaminCatDesigns says:
My cats are indoor cats and are microchipped. We take them with us in the motorhome and they wear a collar when they are with us in the motorhome. They have a tag on the collar with the microchip info. I had collars on my indoor cats from years ago, they got stuck climbing in things and the collars would fall off, one time one cat got his claw stuck in it from scratching and almost tore his claw out while I was at work.
ChineseKitesforKids says:
I don't know, I guess I never understood why cats wore collars? No one ever returns a cat...probably because you can't catch them. I think the collars are just for looks, not safety.
kt_glasses says:
My cat hates everything that I try to put on him.
Terra's Name Change Story
How I Went from Spike to Terra
When I was a kitten I lived with a bunch of college guys and a couple dogs in the western part of the state near Indiana University of Pennsylvania. My first owner/parent named me Spike. He thought I was a boy, because I was such a scrapper. Well, I had to be tough to survive as a little girl cat in a big dog household. A couple years later when I found my forever home, I got a new name that's totally me. And it's not a pugilistic tomcat name, either! My wee pink terra cotta nose is where I got my name. Dad and Mom named me Terra Catta Nosa when they adopted me. Before that, I was known by a few less desirable monikers: that bad cat, the $%@# cat, or simply (ugh!) Spike.
Now please tell me why would anyone name a sweet female kitten Spike? Would you behave like a lady if you had a prize-fighter's name?
Terra Loves Belly Rubs
This kitty cat thinks she's a dog ...
Most cats hate to have their tummy touched. Not so Terra. She loves nothing better than a good (gentle) belly scratch. She also enjoys a good ear and head scratch, but for chilling out, Terra loves a gentle massage from her armpits to her navel and will lie on her back with her feet against your hips so your arm is in just the right position to give her a good tummy rub. Terra Rolls Over Like a Dog
She loves the lie down on the stone pathway or patio, on her back

Chipmunk Hunter, Not a Killer
Terra is a Catch and Release Cat
Terra always releases the chipmunks she hunts down in our garden. She carries her captive to the grass, releases it, then looks away for a moment. The chipmunk plays dead and as soon as she looks away, off it scampers. I don't know if she catches the same chipmunk or a different one each time, but I've seen this game between the cat and the chipmunk at least a half dozen times. You can see the look away / escape in this photo I snapped last summer.
Terra's Garden Bench is Her Birdwatching Perch
From this perch she can see the birds at our neighbor's feeders

Terra is very fond of birds - she likes to sit or lie down in plain sight and watch them. She doesn't stalk them or try to cat them, she seems to appreciate them and they aren't fearful of her.

Terra the Guard Cat
Terra Sits on the Deck Railing to Keep Watch over the Back Yard

About once every hour she goes on patrol all around our property boundary. Although we have no fences, she mainly stays along the property line, checking that no intruders are around and leaving her scent to warn off other cats. She learned the patrolling routine and the scent marking (yes, female cats can and do spray if they want to) from our older neutered male cat, Sparky. He learned it from his mother, Ebony. Go figure!

Terra the Construction Helper

This past summer Terra spent hours on this pile of framing lumber outside our bedroom window. She discovered that it was sunny in the morning and shady in the afternoon, and that the chipmunk she stalks likes to hide underneath. A new twist on the cat and mouse (munk) game.

- Terra is totally terrific. So glad she found her way into your hearts and your loving home. My favorite thing about my adopted tabby, besides her loving disposition, is her cute nose. I think tabbies have the ultimate in kitten noses. Leonardo da Vinci got it right: "The smallest feline is a masterpiece." Congrats on your feature (50 cats monsterboard).

- Okay. Do you honestly believe that *you* decide if a cat wears a collar? Agent N (Nomad - a large, long tabby guy who looked a lot like your beautiful kitty) was always "losing" his collars, so we thought. =^..^= One day, he sat right in front of the hub and showed him exactly how easily and quickly he could remove his collar: nicest guy, a bit smug at times, though.
BTW, Sir Montforth the BunnyPaws tells me that no cat "rolls over like a dog," but that what she is doing is bunnypawsing. ;->
