Why Finance Companies Are Bastards?
Not many people know about the financial options open to them.
As a financial consultant I have a fair idea of what you can and can't do when you are in debt. But then I am in a special situation. I have spent years learning the system and finding out what can and can't be done to help people out.
Most people don't have that privilege. They get into debt, crazy debt, because they don't really understand what is happening.
Take those interest free credit offers the stores put out there. Fantastic right? Interest free - that means I pay nothing. Well, let's leave aside the fact that most of those deals have an 'establishment fee' or 'administration fee' which normally amounts to about 5% anyway, when you come off the interest free term you are straight into the highest interest finance rates out there.
Bottom line, if you get something with an 'interest free term' you had better make sure you pay it off within that term, or you are suddenly going to be hit with a 20%+ interest rate. Some companies will apply that rate to the entire loan, not just the unpaid portion.
Understand this - Finance companies make a lot of money. They are not lending you money because they like you and think that you really should have that new car, house or big screen TV. They are lending you money to make money from you.
