Badgers are very tidy animals. Learn about the Badger.

Badgers are nocturnal and rarely seen during the day. When not active, badgers usually lie up in an extensive system of underground tunnels and nesting chambers, known as a sett. Occasionally, when the weather is particularly hot, badgers may briefly come above ground during daytime. The badger's most important food is earthworms, which are caught on pasture or in deciduous woodland, especially on wet nights. Other foods include bulbs (though not bluebells as commonly thought), small mammals and young rabbits. Blackberries and windfall apples are major food sources in the autumn. Cereals, particularly wheat, may be eaten, especially if other foods are in short supply.

This is a one stop shopping for your  Badger collection.

  • Badgers are very tidy animals. They spend a lot of time transporting grass, straw, moss or bracken to and from their sleeping chambers deep in the sett.
  • Setts are handed down like family houses from generation to generation, and the badger uses the same sett year after year.

Still at home in the Badger State Badgers are natives of the tallgrass prairie and savanna in the southern and sandy central part of the state. "Badgers dig mostly on the sides of the tunnel, which is why their excavations are typically a horizontal oval with numerous claw marks on the side. Badgers are most common in sandy central and western Wisconsin, but in the past decade they have been sighted in every county except Milwaukee.

The Badger is more preditor than prey. Size for size, he's a mean little bugger. Even larger animals are leery of him.

New Wikipedia - Badger

Badger is the common name for any animal of three subfamilies, which belong to the family Mustelidae: the same mammal family as the ferrets, the weasels, the otters, and several other types of carnivore. There are eight species of badger, in three subfamilies: Melinae (badgers of Europe and Asia - see links in species list below), Mellivorinae (the Ratel or honey badger), and Taxideinae (the American badger). The Asiatic stink badgers of the genus Mydaus were formerly included in the Melinae, but recent genetic evidence indicates that these are actually Old World relatives of the skunks (family Mephitidae).

Typical badgers (Meles, Arctonyx, Taxidea and Mellivora species) are short-legged and heavy-set. The lower jaw is articulated to the upper by means of a transverse condyle firmly locked into a long cavity of the cranium, so that dislocation of the jaw is all but impossible. This enables the badger to maintain its hold with the utmost tenacity, but limits its jaw movement to hinging opening and shutting or sliding from side to side.
