Green Tableware for your Next Big Gathering

Sugarcane Bagasse (Bah-Gahs) is in. Styrofoam is out.

Bagasse is a fiber made from sugarcane after its juice is extracted.

Unlike Styrofoam, bagasse is a totally renewable resource, as well as biodegradable and compostable. Another plus is that bagasse is not made from trees. For your next large gathering or party, why not use Bagasse tableware instead of Styrofoam or paper plates?

Our choices really can make a difference. Continue reading to learn more about this wonderful fiber.

Important!

How is Sugarcane Bagasse Made?

Sugarcane is a fast-growing renewable resource.

In the process of manufacturing the sugar, a fiber remains after extracting the juice from the sugarcane. In the past, this fiber was considered waste and burned.

The fiber can be made into items that can be used with all types of food - wet or dry, hot or cold. It is microwave safe and can be frozen. It is also completely biodegradable and can be composted.

Bagasse or Styrofoam?

Does it really matter?

Think switching from Styrofoam, plastic, or paper containers to bagasse containers won't make a difference? Think again.

Styrofoam is not easily recycled and takes hundreds of years to biodegrade. Styrene can leach into your food or drink and there is speculation that long-term use can lead to serious health problems. * Grinning Planet

Plastic pollution from waste is an increasing problem. Plastics do not disintegrate and are filling our landfills and polluting our oceans. We need to drastically reduce our use of all plastics.

Paper products are made from trees. Deforestation is another issue that has widespread effects. It contributes to carbon buildup in the atmosphere and habitat loss for many species.

Bagasse is created from the waste by-product of a renewable resource. Watch this video about why bagasse products are a great alternative.

Where is Sugarcane grown?

Are there cons to sugarcane processing?

Sugarcane Fiber

According to Wikipedia, sugarcane grows well in temperate to tropical regions with more than 60 cm. of moisture per year.

It is indigenous to Asia, but today Brazil is by far the largest producer with about one-third of world production. India and China are two and three for production, followed by Thailand, Pakistan, Mexico, Colombia, Australia, Argentina, and the United States.

Currently, the market for paper products made from agricultural crops is at about 10%, the bulk of this being bagasse. There are many pros to using sugarcane bagasse for paper products over the alternatives. These include things like less deforestation, possibly lower greenhouse gas emissions, and fewer bleaching chemicals used in processing.

Cons to bagasse processing include heavy water requirements and difficult workplace environment, including harmful exposure to pulp fibers.

A full life cycle analysis of bagasse products needs to be completed for an accurate picture, although I do believe that the pros outweigh the cons in this case. The cons can be addressed to lessen their impact.

The problem with Bagasse is that there are no composters in the west that will take Bagasse. It takes too long to breakdown, then end up screening it out and taking to a landfill.
