Who is Bagpuss

Ranked #26,297 in Entertainment, #322,958 overall

Once upon a time.....

....Not so long ago,
There was a little girl and her name was Emily.
And she had a shop.
There it is.
It was a rather unusual shop because it didn't sell anything.
You see, everything in that shop was a thing that somebody had once lost,
And Emily had found,
And brought home to Bagpuss.
Emily's cat Bagpuss.
The most important,
The most beautiful,
The most magical,
Saggy old cloth cat in the whole wide world.
Well now, one day Emily found a thing.
She brought it back to the shop,
And put it down in front of Bagpuss,
Who was in the shop window fast asleep as usual.
But then Emily said some magic words.

'Bagpuss, dear Bagpuss,
Old fat furry cat-puss,
Wake up and look at this thing that I bring.
Wake up, be bright,
Be golden and light,
Bagpuss, O hear what I sing.'

And Bagpuss was wide awake.
And when Bagpuss wakes up all his friends wake up too.
The mice on the mouse-organ woke up and stretched.

Madeleine, the rag doll.

Gabriel, the toad.

And last of all, Professor Yaffle, who was a very distinguished old woodpecker.

He climbed down off his bookend and went to see what it was Emily had brought.

Meet Bagpuss' Friends

No episode of Bagpuss would be complete without Bagpuss' friends.

The Mice

They might be small but the mischievous mice play a major role in every episode with their truly remarkable singing and tricks. Their pride and joy is the Marvellous Mechanical Mouse Organ which would show each episodes story with accompanying music.

There are six mice in all Eddiemouse, Janiemouse, Jenniemouse, Lizziemouse, Williemouse and Charliemouse.

Professor Yaffle

There's no doubt about it, Professor Yaffle is the show's resident intellectual.

Despite this he falls victims to pranks played by the mice on more than one occasion.

Gabriel the Toad

Gabriel is a banjo playing toad who sits perched on a tin on the shelf next to Madeleine the ragdoll.

Gabriel often accompanied by Madeleine provides much of the music in the series.

Madeleine

Madeleine sits on a wicker chair near Gabriel who she often sings with. She has a strong maternal streak most often directed towards the mice.

Ahhhh...Bagpuss! The best cloth cat in the world...I loved him as much as, if not more than Emily!

I loved watching Bagpuss as a child! I have a singing Bagpuss mouse, which my daughter adores, especially when she sings the silly song! When she's older I've bought the DVD for her to watch the episodes. Truly classic children's TV! Blessed.

I found out about Bagpuss when I made a lens on the song "There There" by Radiohead. They made a video that appeared on Bagpuss. I do not know which episode but I will guess The Wise Man, because a man learns a lesson on the video.
p.s I will lensroll and put this in the directory of the lens. thanks for this info on Bagpuss.

I loved Bagpuss as a child and my kids now watch it. Both said "heave, heave" at an early age! Great lens.

And When Bagpuss Goes To Sleep....

Bagpuss gave a big yawn, and settled down to sleep.
And of course when Bagpuss goes to sleep, all his friends go to sleep too.
The mice were ornaments on the mouse-organ.
Gabriel and Madeleine were just dolls.
And Professor Yaffle was a carved wooden bookend in the shape of a woodpecker.
Even Bagpuss himself once he was asleep was just an old, saggy cloth cat.
Baggy, and a bit loose at the seams.
But Emily loved him.
