Bagpuss Storyline

The story line of each of the 13 episodes was remarkably similair. Emily would bring something into the shop that she'd found and was broken, and place it in the window in front of Bagpuss. After saying some magic words to Bagpuss she'd leave and Bagpuss would then awaken, along with all the other characters in the shop. At this point the sepia still photographic portrayal would switch to colour 'stop-motion' animation.
They would all gather around the mystery item discussing what it could be and after a small debate Bagpuss would summon up a memory of the item which would appear in a bubble above his head and a story of the item would be narrated, usually with song and music from the other characters who would then fix it and put it on display in the window for the owner to come and collect. Bagpuss would then yawn and go to sleep along with all the other characters.

Emily's Magic Words or The Bagpuss Lyrics

The magic words said by Emily to awaken Bagpuss

Bagpuss, dear Bagpuss
Old Fat Furry Catpuss
Wake up and look at this thing that I bring
Wake up, be bright, be golden and light
Bagpuss, oh hear what I sing

Professor Yaffle

The Wise Old Woodpecker

Professor Yaffle was quite full of himself and often annoyed by the silliness of the mice. Although he talked with a great air of authority he would often oppose the popular, and usually correct, opinion of what the item may be. He would then defer to Bagpuss to 'think' about it, though would often still continue to utter comments as to the ridiculousness of the project until it's completion.
It is often said that the writer based Professor Yaffle on the Philosopher Bertrand Russell.

The Mice

From the Mouse Organ

6 mice sat on the mouse organ as miniature ornaments/carvings, they too awakened when Bagpuss did and spoke with squeeky voices and though often quite foolish and fun, it was often these that would make the first correct suggestion as to the identity of the mystery 'thing'.
The mice usually took a lead role in repairing and moving the 'thing' often singing whilst rushing around, one of the mice was usually clumsy and often fell and stumbled during this capering.
Although 6 mice are shown on the mouse organ it was usual to only have 4 involved in the repairing and capering, only when the mice were awakening or going to sleep was it that 6 mice appeared together. A further 2mice appear in the books.

The Mice -
Charliemouse, - grey checked suit.

Eddiemouse, - blue suit with a green jacket.

Janiemouse, - pink dress with a red waistcoat.

Jenniemouse, - blue dress.

Lizziemouse, - blue flowery dress with blue waistcoat.

Williemouse, - flowery top and red trousers.

Madeleine

The Rag Doll

Madeleine was the matriarch of the show, usually not moving from her rocking chair and being motherly to the mice. She would usually sing a song related to the object in the style of English Folk Songs as Bagpuss did the thinking whilst being accompanied on guitar/banjo.

Gabriel

Gabriel was the Toad, some may think it was a frog, though the program does refer to him as a toad, sitting on top of a biscuit tin on the mantelpiece behind Madeleine. Although he held and played what looked like a banjo the sound was often more like that of a guitar.
