A perfect title. Great recipes AND extra little stories about the recipe's history or special ingredient. It's what makes a good recipe beloved. You can almost see Ruth Allman in her kitchen making her sourdough soft ginger cookies with the wind howling outside. It makes me think these recipes were handed down within my own family.

Have to get this book!, January 8, 2007
By Monika Plume (Cincinnati OH)
I'm having visions of kid-catered dinners! For the first time, I've found a cookbook for kids with food I actually want to eat and actually want the kids to eat! Healthy, whole foods which are safe for kids to cook (almost) alone (without being the "open a can of this and mix it with a box of that" kind of cooking). Each recipe has a picture and doesn't require chopping or the use of small appliances or stovetop. And best of all, my eight year old daughter can't wait to break out her apron and try them all out.

- I've heard of this dessert, it's from the early 20th century or late 19th century I believe. What's that pink center in the first picture and how does it get that characteristic swirl on the outside?

- Baked alaska is this big nostalgic treat for me. I've only had it once as a kid, and before then had always dreamed of eating it. Then one day I was with a friend's family when they went out for lunch, and the host served up the dessert of my dreams.. baked alaska! Haven't had it since but it is still up there as one of my top desserts. Must try it again so thanks for the recipe :-)
