Baking Powder Biscuit Recipe from Grandma Hallie's Kitchen
Lately, I have been on a quest to create some of her recipes. Unfortunately, no matter how hard or how often I try, my baking powder biscuits just don't come close to hers.
If you have ever had a mouth-watering experience when eating anything made from scratch, you will understand why I would love to be able to successfully create a delicious biscuit. I'm sharing this recipe with you in case you would like to try your luck - or skill - at baking.
Baking Powder Biscuits
This is basically the recipe that my Grandma Hallie used to make her mouth-watering baking powder biscuits. The one main difference is that she used lard (pig fat) as her shortening, which was a very popular staple during her lifetime. According to an article in Wikipedia, lard is making a comeback with a number of chefs and in many restaurants. Often replacing butter, its use was discontinued in the late twentieth century due to "its high saturated fatty acid and cholesterol content."
It is difficult to provide the typical recipe stats such as how many the recipe serves, prep time and total time as that information was not written down, and will vary depending on how long it takes one to put all the ingredients together, roll out the dough and cut out the biscuits.
I do know it takes 12 to 15 minutes to bake and even less time to eat at least the first one! Try butter or jam while the biscuits are still warm!
Ingredients
- 2 c flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 4 tsp baking powder
- 2 tbsp lard or shortening
- 2/3 c milk
Instructions
Sift dry ingredients, cut in shortening, add flour. Pat down on floured board and cut out with biscuit cutter.
Bake 12 to 15 minutes in hot oven, 450 F.
When cool enough to eat, enjoy with butter, jam, or just plain. You can also use this recipe for biscuits and gravy.

- Beautiful lens. I don't think either of my grandmother's would have any recipes - they weren't too big on cooking. My mother cooks a lot, though which makes up for it.

- We were really blessed in that both of my grandmothers and my mother loved to cook. My sister and I both received their inheritance. I usually prefer baking while my sister enjoys making full-blown meals. She is great to have around on the holidays. :)
