The Backstory: Details on what's special about our house and how it got that way 

Renovated by Mogavero Construction with the collaboration of our architect, Monroe & Crocker, LLC, who do incredible period-authentic renovations. The neighborhood of course is exceptionally safe, tree-lined and lovely and has the best schools perhaps in the nation and is convenient to transportation and houses of worship.

We fell in love with this home when we moved to the area. It had the architectural features and extensive living space that we wanted, and we enjoyed the close walking distance to our daughter's new school. Plus, it had sidewalks on both sides of the corner lot - a requirement in our book, since we are big walkers.

We asked our architectural firm from Virginia (Monroe and Crocker) to come here and oversee the renovations for us as they had done such wonderful renovations for us on our homes where we had previously lived in historical districts in Virginia and Rhode Island. They designed a sensitive renovation of the kitchen and master suite using authentic period materials such as Edwardian sinks, subway tile and distressed floor tile and other authentic touches, as well as custom cabinets and countertops and all-Viking appliances. Builder Bill Mogavero suggested other details such as radiant heat in both the kitchen and master bath, all of which were approved on conference calls and site visits by the architects.

In addition to the visible work described above, the plumbing, electrical and cooling infrastructure have been to a large extent updated - overhauled, more or less - by master plumber GW Story and Mishko Electric.

In addition to comfort, one of our key goals was child safety. In this home as in most older homes, the key lead concern was windows that will be opened and closed frequently. With this in mind, we followed not just the minimal recommendation of the lead-testing company but in fact completely replaced the windows in the bedrooms, master bathroom, and master closet on the second floor with custom double-hung wood framed windows. This ensures as we understand it no significant lead dust is generated when we enjoy an open window in these rooms, along with all the other benefits of these modern but period-authentic windows.
