Step-by-step Credit Card Balance Transfer

Moving balance from a high interest credit card to one with lower or no APR is not a very complicated process. But in order to be successful when performing a credit card balance transfer some important steps must be taken.

Assess Your Credit Situation

The first step to performing a credit card balance transfer is to look at your existing credit situation. Figure out if your credit history is solid. See if there is an ongoing pattern of on-time payments and a fair amount of credit card lines that are open. If that is the case, then qualifying for a lower interest credit card should not be a problem. On to this lower interest credit card you may choose to move all or some of you outstanding balances. In just one year hundreds of dollars can be saved on interest charges. A big credit card balance can be paid down to zero if you take opportunity of the 0% APR.

Decide on the Amount Being Transferred

The second step to performing a credit card balance transfer is to decide on the amount that you wish to transfer. Having $20,000 in outstanding balances on various high interest credit cards causes a problem when wanting to move all of the money onto just one low rate balance transfer credit card. It is very unlikely that you will be able to do that. Still if just a fraction is allowed to be transferred, it is a good step to lowering your interest costs. Taking an all or nothing approach is not a very smart thing to do. Gaining weight does not happen overnight, personal debt is exactly the same. Getting rid of both does not occur overnight either. A crucial move has to be taken. You have to decide that you want change, and then slowly but surely start moving toward that decision.

Check the Balance Transfer Fees

Third, consider the fee that may be charged when performing a credit card balance transfer. Almost always there will be a fee involved, unless stated that no fees apply. Usually, 3 percent is taken off the amount transferred. This does not sound like much, but when having a large balance, this can balance out to a large amount that has to be paid. Many banks put a limit on the transfer fee. Having a set limit like $50 to $75 keeps many from being discourages when having to transfer large amounts.

Reducing Your Loss is the First Step to Being Debt Free

Moving your money from a high rate credit card to a 0 percent APR for a year or longer is a very smart thing to do. This financial move requires discipline, but helps getting out of debt. Having the opportunity to perform a credit card balance transfer can to helpful to some but hurt others. Many may start to think that they have the freedom for more debt, but of course they are wrong. Remember that balance transfers reduce your loss of money, but do not make you debt free.

About credit-card

My name is Dan Dumov.

For the last 3-4 years I've been working as a business analyst and a consultant for quite a few credit card related websites, among which are: Credit Card Deals Online - CreditCardMix, Best Credit Card Offers from CardFusion, Best Gas Cards at PumpAndSave, and others. Going through the details of numerous credit card offers on a daily basis has made me sort of a cross-bank expert on current credit card offers that circulate in the internet, TV, mail, etc. I've become a great help for many of my friends as they were looking for a particular cool credit card deal. Now I'll be trying to be useful to the visitors of squidoo lenses.

My pages will contain the most current information about the best credit card offers available online at the moment. I'll supply direct links to the offers I'll be covering here. I'll gladly answer your questions or consider your suggestions as for the content or ideas presented by me. Enjoy my postings!
