America's National Bird the Bald Eagle in VNP

The Bald Eagles in Voyageurs National Park information. The Blad Eagle has always been my favorite bird, that is so majestic and at the top of the food chain. There are more Bald Eagle viewings in VNP than any other naional parks in the USA. I have added some recommended items for the Gold and Christmas Shoppers.

Minnesota's Voyageurs National Park covers 218,055 acres with 4 major lakes, 38% is fresh water lakes, 26 interior lakes, and 655 miles of shoreline. With more than 30 lakes and more than 900 islands, Voyageurs spans a watery 55 mile stretch of the U.S. and Canada border in a wilderness north woods.

How Big Do Bald Eagles Get?

Wild and free Bald Eagles may live as long as thirty years.

The Bald Eagle population at Voyageurs National Park (VNP), in northern Minnesota is increasing from year to year. People can observe the Bald Eagles in their natural habitat at Kabetogama Lake, Namakan Lake, Sandy Point and Rainy Lake, which are the four major lakes that make up the park. Bald Eagles are more likely to be seen at VNP park than any other national park in the lower 48 states. The Bald Eagle is a bird of prey found in North America that is most recognizable as the national bird and symbol of the United States of America. Bald eagles can fly to an altitude of 10,000 feet. During level flight, they can achieve speeds of about 30 to 35 mph.

The Bald Eagle is a large bird with a body length of 35 to 42 inches and a wingspan of 72 to 96 inches. They have a mass of 10 to 15.5 pounds. The females are about 25 percent larger than males. -- Their lifting power is about four pounds. The Bald Eagle is at the top of the food chain. They are very strong swimmers that can be overtaken by hypothermia in waters that are too cold. Their hunting area varies from 1,700 to 10,000 acres. Home ranges are smaller where food is in great abundance.

Growing up in this wilderness area I learned that its not the Bald Eagles to look out for, but its the Hawks. My dad told me to watch out for the Hawks so that they don't get the kittens that our cat had. As I sat watching one of the kittens in the front yard one day at about the age of five, a Hawk flew into the yard and picked up the kitten and flew away with it. I was shocked and still am that this happened 10 feet away from me.

The Bald Eagle Population is Increasing

VNP Protected Eagle Nesting Sites

Voyageurs National Park biologists counted 69 bald eagle nests in the park's boundaries on April 16 of 2009 by an aerial survey.

Adults eagles were seen incubating at 38 nests compared to 29 in 2008, 24 in 2007, 30 in 2006, 26 in 2004 and 2005, 24 in 2003, 22 in 2000 and 20 pairs in 1999.

VNP Superintendent Mike Ward said, "There has been a steady increase in eagle nesting activity within Voyageurs National Park during the past 37 breeding seasons. This trend and the annual increase in the number of young fledged within the park is good news for a healthy eagle population. Overall, we believe that by reducing the adverse potential of human/eagle interactions around our active bald eagle nesting sites we have allowed for greater nesting success. At the same time we have increased the potential to view more eagle activity for our visitors. Our specific management goal is to help ensure the continued reproductive success and sustainability of the park's bald eagle population and that strategy appears to be working well."

Since 1992, VNP has temporarily closed the land and water areas around active bald eagle nests to visitors during the eagle's critical nesting periods.

Bald Eagle Nest Sites in VNP

There are 39 nesting sites occupied by breeding pairs in VNP

* Bald Eagle areas are protected!

Thirteen of the park's 39 active nesting sites occupied by breeding pairs were temporarily closed to human activities. After the young left the nest by the middle of August, the temporary closures were lifted. Motorized and non-motorized watercraft users are to avoid land or water that is near the bald eagle nesting sites within about 218 yards during closure periods. People are not to stop on the water when passing near these sites that are marked with signs or buoys.

Individual eagles differ in temperament and tolerance to human and natural activities. People play a very important role in protecting nesting eagles and other birds. Some are easily displaced by human/eagle interactions, whereas others are more accustomed to close interactions with humans. Eagles may still be incubating eggs until late May, and if flushed off the nest for too long a period, the eggs will cool causing the embryos to die. May and June are particularly sensitive periods for nesting eagles.

If the Bald Eagles feel threatened, they may abandon their nesting efforts. Newly hatched eaglets are unable to regulate their body temperature and require constant attention from an adult to protect them from cold winds and rain and the hot sun. When eaglets are able to regulate their own body temperatures they are not as vulnerable when the parent is away.

Bald Eagle Nest With It's Baby

The American Bald Eagle is no longer on the endangered species list.

Adult Bald Eagles have a brown body with a white head and tail. They have bright yellow irises, taloned feet, and a hooked beak. The beak, talons, and feathers are made of keratin. They have 7,000 feathers. - Once paired, Bald Eagles remain together until one dies.

Juveniles are completely brown with white speckles, except for their yellow feet. The males and females are identical in plumage color. They reach full sexual maturity in four to five years.

The Bald Eagle builds the largest nest of any North American bird, up to 13 feet deep and 8 feet wide, and 1.1 tons in weight. They typically have from one to three eggs at a time. - 35 days of incubation duties are shared by both male and female, along with a nesting cycles of about 20 weeks.

* Eagles molt in patches, taking almost half a year to replace feathers, starting with the head and working downward.

A Bald Eagle Catching a Fish Photo

The Bald Eagle's diet consists mainly of fish. It hunts fish by swooping down and snatching the fish out of the water with its talons. It is an opportunistic feeder also.

Fish normally have a back that is dark in color and are not easy to see by a fisherman close up in the water. One day when I was fishing with friends in Kabetogama Lake, an eagle that we had been watching, swooped down and scooped up a good 4 pound Walleye out of the water about 50 feet from our boat. A Bald Eagle's eye sight must be very sharp to see a fish from 100's of yards above. It was a spectacular sight to see!

A female Bald Eagle will carry her eggs for 35 days, and then she will lay one egg per day. The male will take his turn keeping the eggs warm first, while the female goes hunting for food to eat. He is careful to not harm the eggs with his talons, while he settles in to protect the eggs. An inexperienced eagle may get blown off the nest in a 40 mile an hour wind, if it doesn't turn to face the wind.

The American Bald Eagle is Majestic!

Out of all the birds in the world, the American Bald Eagle has been my favorite. Seeing how they soar high effortlessly and glide in the sky, is a thrill to me. I have seen many eagles in the wild. I am happy about the increase in population in North America. - With the increase, there are other species of birds, animals and fish that are decreasing in population.

Therefore, the endangered species list may be lengthened with other birds, animals and fish... That is life on life's terms! - With every action there is a reaction ... and there will be a reaction.

I hope that more Bald Eagles are not taken into captivity or shot. The Bald Eagle is a Symbol of Freedom to the American people. - I believe they should stay free!

The Bald Eagle's Eyesight

They can see a chicken or rabbit 2 to 3 miles away!

The Bald Eagles eyesight is believed to be six times sharper than that of humans even though they are similar but smaller. Their eyes are situated at the sides of the skull and project outward and forward so that there is an overlapping of vision, which gives the bald eagle binocular-eyesight to help them gauge distances precisely. Their eyes are large in proportion to their head. The relatively large eyes leave little space in the skull for the eye muscles and so the eye mobility is limited. Bald Eagles make up for this by rotating their heads up to a 270 degree angle. Their sharp-extraordinary eyes are their best sense. Bald Eagle can spot prey small up to a distance of hundreds of yards. Bald Eagles are capable of seeing fish in the water from several hundred feet above. They have two foveae or centers of focus, that allow the birds to see both forward and to the side at the same time.

Eagles are not noted for their hearing, but they don't have poor hearing. Active by day, birds of prey like hawks and eagles use their hearing to locate prey and other birds. However, sharpness of hearing is essential for some owls like the Grey, which can locate prey in the dark by sound and hear prey under the snow from long distances, they can pin-point sound without the use of sight.

Bald Eagles usually mate for life and are territorial. If one of the mating pair dies, the other is left to defend its territory alone. In the spring the weather can be cold and there are snow and ice storms that are a danger to eggs hatching. If one eagle is left to protect eggs, it will eventually abandon the nest for food and water. Wind storms can blow Eagles' nests out of trees.

The Bald Eagle population in the U.S. was estimated in the 1700's to be between 300,000 - 500,000. The population was once as low as 500 nesting pairs in the lower 48 states. Bald Eagle populations rebounded since. The lower 48 states now hosts over 5,000 nesting pairs, and a total of about 70,000 Bald Eagles in the whole of North America including Alaska and Canada.

American Bald Eagles in the News

I read some very interesting articles from here about eagles. Google News

This summer in VNP 29 of the 39 active breeding pairs had 38 young fledge from their nests. Ten active breeding pairs that incubated in spring failed to hatch eggs or to raise one young to fledging age. One breeding pair occupied a breeding area but did not breed. Adult bald eagles do not always breed annually.

Blog Posts for Bald Eagles

Bald Eagles were affected by DDT, a pesticide that was banned in 1972 in the US, but its dangers were known in the early 1960s. It isn't lethal to Bald Eagles, but the DDT they ingested weakened the shells of their eggs and they cracked under the weight of an adult eagle. Banning of DDT in 1972 and the passage of the landmark Endangered Species Act in 1973 brought this majestic bird of prey's recovery of numbers to a faster pace than conservationists expected. Illegal shooting of Bald Eagles is the biggest threat to their survival today. More threats include lead poisoning from eating ducks that have lead shot in them, habitat loss and power line electrocution.

Wowzers did we ever see Bald Eagles on our trip to Kabetogama this weekend--a total of 14! The most exciting one was this morning--we got to watch for about 10 minutes as an eagle swooped a duck in the water. This drama was already in progress when we spotted it. One could tell that the Bald Eagle was expending a lot of energy on the attempts to get the duck as it "ducked" just in time. The Bald Eagle took a break and perched on top of a big pine and we moved on. The duck in the attack was alone, though there were 2 large groups of ducks on the water about 200 and 400 feet away near the shore. The Bald Eagle focused only on the lone duck.
Other Bald Eagles were spotted in trees or in the air near the highway. We figured the eagles were pretty interested in gut piles left by hunters as it was the opening weekend for Minnesota's white tail deer season. We saw a group of 6 Bald Eagles perched in trees on a field. It was wondrous!
