What is a Balikbayan box?

Need Boxes? Moving Boxes? Click here for discounted moving boxes delivered right to your door!

A balikbayan box (literally returnees to one's homeland'' box) is a ubiquitous cardboard box containing any number of small items and sent by an overseas Filipino known as a "balikbayan". Though often shipped by freight forwarders specializing in balikbayan boxes by sea, such boxes can be brought by Filipinos returning to the Philippines by air.

These boxes might contain nearly anything that can fit and that the sender thinks the recipient would like, regardless of whether those items can be bought cheaply in the Philippines, such as non-perishable food, toiletries, household items, electronics, toys, designer clothing, or items hard to find in the Philippines.

A balikbayan box intended for air travel is designed to conform to airline luggage restrictions and many Filipino stores carry them. Some boxes come with a cloth cover and side handles. Others are tightly secured with tape or rope, and thus not confused with an ordinary moving box more lightly wrapped.

Shipped boxes are delivered directly to the recipient, nearly always the family of the overseas Filipino.

Part of the attraction of the balikbayan box is economic. If the items were sent individually or in smaller boxes through postal services, the cost could be significant. The tradeoff is a long transit time by container ships, typically taking several weeks, and the lack of a solid delivery date.

Another part of the attraction is the cultural expectation that returning travelers will bring gifts to family, friends and colleagues left behind in the Philippines. In this way, it is related to the practice of "pasalubong".

Just learning about "Balikbayan" from your lens! Have a few Filipino friends and we recently had a Filipino young lady as a tenant in our condo -- she was quite a cook. Looking for some good Filipino recipes. PS Nice to see you around! ;)

Err, hindi ba yung balikbayan pag umuwi sa Pinas (from the words "balik" and "bayan"), not necessarily lahat ng nasa abroad? Anyway, nice lens.

Pasalubong

Don't forget to bring a little something!

Anybody remotely familiar with Filipino customs and traditions doesn't need an explanation of the importance of Pasalubongs. For all others, here's an attempt to define the meaning of this wonderful gesture.

Pasalubong is a Tagalog word meaning "souvenir". In the Philippines it has acquired the meaning of a small gift or souvenir from someone traveling either whilst visiting or upon returning home. The literal meaning of pasalubong is to "greet", "surprise" or "meet with".

Pasalubong is very popular among Filipinos if good relations are to be maintained. The gesture of handing out "pasalubong" conveys that loved ones or friends are being remembered. Pasalubong can range from food items such as fruits, imported confectionery goods and other sweets. Pasalubong can also be other items such as shirts, novelty items, knives and toys etc. If it is something that can be bought or wrapped, it's a pasalubong. Pasalubong is also used in daily or frequent interactions or greetings with family members commonly when coming home from work. Fastfood, toys, snacks or fruits are given to family members as a sign of thoughtfulness and care to them.
