A counted cross stitch pattern of ballerinas in white tulle dresses preparing for a class in a large rehearsal room at the Paris Opera with a sanded wood floor. Several large mirrors reflect the dancers practicing at the barre, stretching, and gossiping. An elderly violinist is seated on a piano bench with his back to the grand piano, getting ready to play for the class. His music is standing in his inverted top hat, and the violin case is on the floor nearby. A watering can stands next to the piano for sprinkling the rosin on the floor. Changing The Fabric Color
Even though the cross stitch kit you get comes with 14 count white aida. It certainly doesn't mean your stuck with it. Heck turn it into a dust rag (or perhaps stash it away for another project) and select another aida for your current cross stitch project.
* Change The Count - Simply changing the count from 14 to 16, 18 or 20 will tighten down the image giving it the appearance of far more detail and refinement.
* Change the color - This gets a little more tricky because often how a thread looks on white will look different on another color. But generally changing your light color aida or linen for another light colored aida or linen should work well.
If you want a dramatic fabric color change I would suggest taking the most prominent colors along and lay them on the fabric that you are thinking of using. This will help you to see if they clash or coordinate.
A important consideration to ask yourself is ... do the floss colors lose the vibrancy when laid next to this fabric.
Changing The Floss Color
This is a far more tricky operation than switching the cross stitch fabric. If you are naturally good with selecting color it should be no trouble but if you are uncertain here's a tip.
Let's say you want to change a women's dress from green to blue. Simply pull all the green dress colors and find a similar value shade of blue. By that I mean when looking over the floss find one that visually fits in the same family as the green. They are the same lightness, vibrancy and tone. Merely replace all the colors for matching tonal colors in the new color palette your creating.
Once again be careful that the new colors work well with your fabric and don't get lost and also that they don't clash with the other cross stitch design colors. If the new colors are indeed of the same tonal value and shade the transition should be flawless.
Swapping floss colors might be best handled in small stages until you get a firm grasp on what your doing.
Adding Embellishments
Adding beads or ribbons can bring a sparkle bit of dazzle and elegance to cross stitch designs. Adding a beaded necklace or halo can make your needlework all that much more personal.
Size and color are the most important aspects to consider when adding embellishments -Things to consider when selecting beads or ribbons is to make sure that the beads are size appropriate for the cross stitch you are going to be using them on. When in doubt simply adding clear beads will still give you some sparkle without throwing off your color scheme.

- I have been for a ballet cross stitch or needlework that I found on-line about eight years ago and haven't been able to find it recently. It is a line of dancers in silhouette on a bar. I think there were six dancers??

- Hmmm, can't say that I've seen this but if I do run across it I will definitely add it. Patterns come and go quite a bit and I also have access to (for the most part) the more major companies. But again, I'll keep an eye out.
