Balloon Decorations for Birthday Parties

If you're struggling to find great balloon decorations for birthday parties and special events, here are a few simple things you can do that look absolutely stunning. You don't need loads of time and tanks of helium to pull of an amazing look. Just pick a theme or color combination that suits the person or persons being celebrated and follow these easy directions for a surprisingly cool party.

It used to be that I did nothing more than call the local party goods store for a standard bunch of helium balloons and one Mylar thrown in for special effect but once you learn a couple slick balloon tricks, you'll see making your own party decorations is not only easy but a whole lot of fun.

Types of Balloon Decorations

Columns, Arches, and Shapes

You've probably seen balloon arches and columns before but those decorations can be customized beyond the boring old string of balloons. You can use different shaped balloons, patterned balloons, stuffed balloons, and the straight, twisting balloons to accessorize them and make them really unique, like these:

There are other types of balloon decorations you can make, though:

  • Balloon Flowers

  • Balloon Animals

  • Balloon Garland

  • Balloon Table Centerpieces

  • Floating Balloon Clouds

  • Balloon Ceilings

  • Balloon People

  • Balloon Wall Decorations

So many to choose form and some are certainly easier to make than others but we're going to get to the two tricks you need to know to make these things yourself.

Making Your Decorating Plan

Choose Your Balloon Colors and Shapes

Just a piece of paper and a pencil (or an online sketch pad, depending on your technical preferences) can help you focus on a set of party decorations. Walk through these steps to come up with your plan and then you can break your plan down into it's smaller tasks, assign dates and you'll stay on track for getting the balloon decorations purchased and made in time for the big day.

Choose where you are going to hold the party.

Sketch out the floor plan for your party space.

Make a note on the sketch about the location of furniture, windows, and doorways.

Decide whether you want to just use balloons around one specific location (like where the guest of honor will be sitting or where the presents will be located) or if you want all-over color and balloon decorations.

Consider your party space as being broken into three sections. The first section is up around the ceiling. The second is the middle, or eye-level, section of the room. The third section is down by the floor.

Choose one type of balloon decoration for each "level". Here are the options for each level:

Ceiling: Balloon drop, balloon arch (covers all three levels), balloon ceiling, garland
Eye-level: Balloon centerpieces, floating clouds, arches, columns, wall decorations
Floor-level: Arches, columns, floor clusters

Choose a theme that would be meaningful for the birthday person. If they play a musical instrument you could do a music themed party; if they like movies you could do a movie themed party; if they like sports you could do a golf, football, or baseball themed party.

Find some Mylar balloons in a shape that matches your theme.

Once you have the theme and the Mylar shapes picked out, you can easily choose 2-3 other colors to use in your balloon decorations.

Decide how many of each type of balloon decoration you are going to need based on the size of your party space.
Make a list of necessary supplies and purchase them ahead of time.

Balloon Duplets

Step 1 in Making Balloon Decorations

A "balloon duplet" is two balloons tied together at their ends. This forms the building block for many balloon decorations including arches, columns, garland and garland.

To make a balloon duplet, you inflate one balloon and hold it closed at the end while inflating the second balloon. You tie the two balloon ends together to tie them off. Make a second duplet and twist the middle of the two duplets together to lock the sets in place. For columns, arches, and garland you keep adding more duplets by twisting them into your structure.

The following video gives you a demonstration of the technique.
