Balloons: They Can Do More Than You Think

What is it about balloons? Is it their roundness, their color, their ability to float above us? Perhaps it's their ephemeral nature that makes us treasure them, in much the same way we love an ice cream cone, even as it melts and drips -- challenging us to eke the most pleasure from it in the brief span allotted. Whatever the reason, balloons have been a source of simple joy for many years, even at the inevitable flaccid end -- or at the more abrupt "pop!" of a sudden explosion. And especially when a water-filled balloon hits its target with a satisfying "splat!" (Let me just state here that I know there are people who have a phobia of balloons and I have no wish to upset anyone or to imply that everyone loves them)

Picture a plain dining room table with a single gaily decorated birthday cake. Now picture it with a balloon floating overhead. Now picture many balloons floating around it. A small smile becomes bigger, and bigger and the attendant mood inflates accordingly.

In this brief homage to balloons, you will find some history, some great books and funny video clips, a few facts, and several astounding examples of balloon art. I also share a very personal story about a purple balloon.

Purple Balloon Story

the-purple-balloonOn a visit to San Diego when our daughter was not yet 2 years old, we spent an afternoon at Seaport Village -- a waterfront shopping area with boardwalks, restaurants, and enticing little boutiques. I remember her in her little purple pants and floppy sunhat, running down the wooden walk with her slightly lurching gait -- those chubby little legs working just as hard as they could.

We'd only been there about 5 minutes before she spied the balloon vendor with his enormous bouquet of colorful orbs. She chose a purple one -- about 18" in diameter (it truly was more than half as tall as she was) with a long, curly string. We tied it to her wrist and it bobbed above her like a special moon caught in her gravitational pull. "B-loo!" was her happy and oft-repeated cry.

We strolled and shopped for a while, and finally decided to get some lunch at one of the restaurants. Its picturesque exterior was kitschy Swiss chalet; inside it was one vast expanse of wooden floors and an A-frame ceiling that towered above us. Literally above us, because the table to which we were shown was almost dead center in the restaurant -- directly under the apex of the ceiling.

A wooden high-chair was pulled up to the table and we settled my daughter.. In order to take off her little jacket (and to allow her to eat), we naturally had to untie the balloon from her wrist. Carefully, I untied it, then went to attach it to the back of her chair.

Alas [cue the sad music], I never was very good with knots. The string slipped through my fingers and the big, purple balloon rose inexorably to the ceiling, some 20 feet above us. As it ascended, with me frantically (and uselessly) chasing it, I could hear my daughter's sad cries, "B-loo, b-loo..." floating after it.

She was astonishingly brave about it -- shedding only a quiet tear or two -- but her eyes never strayed from her balloon, lolling against the ceiling. No other balloon could comfort her. That purple balloon had been the chosen one. My daughter somehow found it in herself to accept its loss; she could not -- even at that young age -- contemplate replacing it.

That event happened nearly 18 years ago, and we still speak of "B-loo" as a dearly remembered friend. My daughter has forgiven me, but she hasn't forgotten.

Ohio is the balloon capital of the U.S.

My Favorite Balloon Book

Harvey Potter's Balloon Farm

I love this book. The quirky story, set in a farming community, tells the story of Harvey Potter -- a mysterious and eccentric man who raises a very unusual crop: balloons. The narrator, a young girl fascinated with his crop, sets out to discover how he achieves his marvels and later... Well, I don't want to spoil the ending. Mark Buehner's colorful illustrations are enchanting. The sight of those fanciful balloons blooming in neat rows in an otherwise realistic setting is just magical. I love the use of the Southern dialect, which adds to the realistic tone of the story. This book is a treasure. Buy one to keep and another (or several) to give or lend.

Latex vs. Mylar?

latex-vs-mylar

Regular balloons come in two main types: latex and mylar. Latex balloons are colorful and fragile -- more conducive to artistic displays. Mylar ballons are shiny, often brightly printed, can be made in enormous sizes, and last for a very long time. Latex balloons are highly likely to pop -- sooner, rather than later. Mylar balloons last long past their original event, can even be shipped, and are very sturdy.

But which do you prefer? Do you like the softer look of latex or shiny mylar? Are you attracted to a balloon that will stand up to rough treatment, or are you intrigued by a balloon that -- by nature -- has a fleeting existence?

A timeless story that remains as fresh today as when it was first written in the 1950s.

Fear of balloons is called
GLOBOPHOBIA
It is a serious phobia and people who have it should not be ridiculed nor subjected to stresses such as intentional popping or waving in the face.

Funny, Possibly Disturbing Animation

I'd have to term this revenge of the balloons. It's a little bloodthirsty and some people might find it upsetting, but if you have the right sense of humor (and I confess I do), you'll laugh.

The 21 Balloons

In this classic story by William Penne DuBois, a retired math professor decides to follow his dream of sailing the world in an enormous, elaboratly outfitted air balloon. His balloon goes down and he finds himself on Krakatoa, among a wealthy, balloon-obsesed society that welcomes him. The story of his adventures -- the scientific explanations of ballon merry-go-rounds and other fancies -- is magical, humorous, and intriguing.

Of course, Krakatoa erupts -- a factor which has been planned for by its inhabitants so that they all escape -- and the math teacher mysteriously resurfaces in a different ocean, tied to 20 balloons.

A fascinating, fanciful, charming story that combines imagination and science.
