Bamboo Diapers are Hot
Bamboo diapers are popular for their environmentally friendly qualities as well as their soft and absorbent nature. Discover why bamboo diapers are so popular and learn about some different types of bamboo diapers. Shown here is a BumGenius bamboo fitted diaper made with bamboo terry cloth.
You will be seeing some changes in how bamboo diapers are described and sold now. The FTC decided that since bamboo fibers are processed before becoming fabric, that they must now be labeled as "viscose of bamboo" or "bamboo rayon." It is still the same soft, absorbent fabric, just under a different name.
The FTC also said that unless each company does their own product testing, they can't say that bamboo fabrics are antibacterial. A study in Japan found that bamboo fabrics retain their antibacterial qualities through 50 washes, but since most small manufacturers can't afford such studies, they are not allowed to sell their products as antibacterial.
Why is bamboo so popular for diapers?
Soft, green and absorbent
Japanese scientists found that bamboo fabric retains it's unique antibacterial qualities even after 50 washings. When they tried to culture bacteria on bamboo fabric they found that 70 percent of the bacteria died. That is good news for cloth diapers made from bamboo fabric.
Growing bamboo takes far fewer resources than growing cotton, especially conventionally grown cotton. Bamboo grows up to a foot a day without fertilizers or pesticides. Bamboo removes 40 percent more carbon dioxide from the air than trees do. While creating bamboo fabric still has a ways to go before it is as sustainable as it could be, it is still easier on the environment than creating synthetics. While there is no perfect environmental choice for any fabric, we believe that bamboo is an excellent and environmentally friendly choice for cloth diapering.
Bamboo is 60 percent more absorbent than cotton, and can absorb up to 3 times it's weight in water. Bamboo is stronger when combined with cotton (we use an organic cotton blend) and many manufacturers use a little polyester in their bamboo blend to make it more durable. While we love 100 percent natural fabrics, we feel that a more durable fabric is more environmentally friendly than one that needs to be replaced prematurely.
Bamboo is breathable and is often used next to the skin because it wicks moisture away quickly. Bamboo is one of the softest fabrics you will ever feel! It retains it's softness after many washings better than hemp or cotton.
Little for Now Bamboo Diapers

Little for Now bamboo diapers are available in three varieties: a one-size fitted diaper with a fold out soaker, a sized (S-M-L) diaper with a quick-dry snap-in soaker, and a prefold style quick-dry bamboo flat diaper. All varieties come in cute prints, vibrant hand-dyed bamboo velour, and natural, undyed velour. All Little for Now bamboo diapers are made with a 70 percent organic viscose of bamboo, 28 percent organic cotton, and 2 percent polyester (the polyester is added in the backing of the velour to add durability). We use durable Oeko-Tex certified snaps so there is no snagging in the wash. Snaps look new longer than hook and loop (like Velcro) so your diapers look new for much longer.
Shown here is a Little for Now bamboo prefold with a colorful cotton knit outer. We use this as a night time diaper with a Sheepish Grins wool diaper cover. Buy Little for Now bamboo diapers here.
Drybees Gone Natural Bamboo Diapers

The Drybees Gone Natural bamboo diaper is finally available! These two-sized diapers come in a small size for newborns and small infants and a larger size for medium and large babies. Absorbent bamboo velour is accented with beautiful rainbow serging and come with snaps. The inner soakers fold out for easy washing and fast drying.
Drybees bamboo cloth diapers are soft and absorbent, yet fast to dry and easy to use. Gotta love that! The new Drybees Gone Natural line offers two sizes of adjustable bamboo diapers. Size 1 will fit from about 5 pounds to 15 pounds. Size 2 is said to fit from 12 pounds to 36 pounds, but my tester is only 12 pounds and she is wearing it on a medium setting. She wears mostly medium diapers now, so this is a typical medium fit. I think this diaper could easily be used as small as 8 pounds so for many babies this is a birth to potty training diaper.
Both sizes adjust with snaps at the front, so they can be adjusted for several rise settings. Two attached soakers allow for plenty of absorbency while still drying quickly since no single part of the diaper is very thick, but taken together you have lots of layers in the middle.
