Bamboo Yarn - A Trendy New Fiber

Bamboo is a new option for knitters and crocheters, recently being introduced as a new eco-friendly fiber. It is a perfect gift for your favorite knitter or crocheter.

I've used some of the Bamboo yarn to create knitting projects. I found bamboo yarn very fun to work with; it is very soft to the touch and knits up beautifully, especially if knitted on bamboo needles.

Bamboo yarn has a beautiful sheen and is available in a variety of colors. The yarn is very pleasing to work with and because it is soft to the touch can be used year round.

Where can I find out more about Bamboo?

Is Bamboo Yarn or Fiber Flammable?

This was a little tough to find a specific answer.

After researching the Internet, I would have to say that the answer is "Maybe."

I found the following information on the Bamboo Clothes site (they also sell Bamboo yarn):

Almost all polyester/cotton blend fabrics are finished with formaldehyde, a carcinogen, added to make fabrics wrinkle or flame resistant. Our bamboo blends have no such chemical applications, and are all in compliance with, and have passed, the Class 1 flammability requirements for JCPenney, the Flammable Fabrics Act and Standard for the Flammability of Clothing Textiles.

In contrast, one reviewer posted on the Knitter's Review forum that they thought Bamboo yarn had a tendency to flare.

You could try an experiment (carefully) like the Knitting Fiend to see how easily (or not) bamboo yarn catches on fire.

The safest bet, if you are concerned about bamboo yarn not being flame resistant, is to use bamboo yarn for clothes instead of for bedding.

I think I've found my new favourite trend, but I am interested to find out how flammable bamboo yarn is. Is it safe to use for baby blankets, for example?
