It's Simple! Really! Make Your Own Baby Food!

Making your own baby food does not have to be complicated or take a lot of valuable time. It can also save you a TON of money. You do not need a lot of fancy gadgets (though I love gadgets...especially kitchen ones) but sometimes they make it even easier!

So, what about the banana you ask? Go get the banana. Mush it! Simple as that.

How you ask? Well one way is to use a zip lock bag. Peel the banana...toss it into the bag, get rid of most of the air, seal and mush away.

Better yet, DELEGATE! Give the bag o' banana to your older child (under your supervision of course) and let him or her mash the banana. Kids love to help out mom, especially when it is for their baby brother or sister. By the time their done with it...it is perfect!

Make sure all the banana has been mushed. Open the bag and scoop it into a little bowl. Feel free to add some baby cereal such as oatmeal, rice or mixed grain. You can then add some water, breast milk or formula to thin to your desired consistency.

Bananas and the Food Mill

A food mill is another great way to make homemade baby food. Rather than using a food storage bag, you can use a food mill instead. The results are the same, though the food mill gives a bit more reassurance that you have adequate 'mushed' the banana (or whatever soft food you are preparing).

I find that the mill works best with soft foods like bananas, cooked apples, ripe pears and peaches as well as cooked yams, beets, sweet potatoes and squash. I find that foods like green beans and peas are best prepared in a blender or food processor.
