Counselling at The Paloma Centre, Banbury.

Counselling is one of several life enhancing therapies such as CBT, Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP that we practise at The Paloma Centre here in Banbury in the Cherwell Valley in Oxfordshire.

Do not be confused by such terms as Rogerian Counselling, Eclectic Counselling or Person Centred Counselling - we will be happy to explain them to you.

Counselling is used for many issues such as weight loss, smoking cessation, low self esteem, lack of confidence, depression, relationship problems and much more.

Counselling is a supportive practice based upon an understanding relationship between client and counsellor whereby non-judgmental, unconditional positive regard is extended to the client in working through the issues surrounding a current concern. It does not necessarily take you back to look at root causes as with Psychotherapy. The counsellor acts as a supportive guide in helping the client to find their own preferred solution to their difficulty. Often used in times of emotional or traumatic stress surrounding events such as divorce or personal loss, when we may be temporarily overcome by events or their resultant complexities, counselling is a valuable supportive therapy which can help us to see the issues involved and the way ahead more clearly.

Keeping abreast of developments in therapy we have recently added Meridian  Energy Therapies to the Practice which, in combination with other therapies, can all help unblock emotional difficulties and restore balance in life.

To find out more or learn about our work with Alzheimer's call David on 01295 277686 or visit our website at www.thepalomacentre.com to read all about it. We are a UKCP regulated practice and our Guidelines may be found by following the link.

Stop smoking, lose weight, low self esteem, lack of confidence, anxiety states, depression, fear of flying, eating disorders.

Counselling

Counselling - what does it do?

Counselling is often referred to as a "talking therapy" and is used as a personal support system in a very wide variety of circumstances. Perhaps one of the better known examples would be "Relate" who, as an organisation, specialise in marital or family oriented issues.

To illustrate the width of potential for use of such therapy, set out below are descriptions taken from Training Directory of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy .

Person - Centred Counselling, devised by Carl Rogers and also called "Client-Centred" or "Rogerian" counselling, this is based on the assumption that an individual, seeking help in the resolution of a problem he (or she) is experiencing, can enter into a relationship with another individual (counsellor) who is sufficiently accepting and permissive to allow the client to freely express emotions and feelings. This will enable the client to come to terms with negative feelings, which may have caused emotional problems, and develop inner resources. The objective is for the client to become able to perceive himself as a person with the power and freedom to change, rather than as an object.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy /Counselling
This approach stresses the importance of the unconscious and past experience in determining current behaviour. The client is encouraged to talk about childhood relationships with parents and other significant people and the therapist focuses on the client/therapist relationship (the dynamics) and in particular on the transference. Transference is when the client projects onto the therapist feelings experienced in previous significant relationships. The Psychodynamic approach is derived from Psychoanalysis but usually provides a quicker solution to emotional problems.

Eclectic Counselling
An eclectic counsellor will select what is applicable to the client from a range of theories, methods and practices. Justification is based on the theory that there is no proof that any one theoretical approach works better than all others for a specific problem. The Paloma Centre is focused on the Eclectic approach including various therapies more particularly detailed within the Psychotherapy section on the website at www.thepalomacentre.com or call on 01295 277686.
