Bangladesh
Bangladesh is located in southern Asia. It is bordered by Myanmar and India. It is a small country, just over 140,000 square kilometers in area. The country is home to up to 159 million people, making it the 7th most populous nation on the globe in spite of its relatively small geographic size. The official language of the people of Bangladesh is Bengali, but English is also readily spoken and understood. Over 85% of the people of the country claim Islam as their religion. Hinduism is the other main religion.
The capital city of Bangladesh is Dhaka. Today, over 10 million people reside in Dhaka, making it a crowded, thriving metropolis. It is the largest city in the country at this time.
Bangladesh currently operates with a parliamentary representative democratic republic form of government. The Prime Minister is the head of the government. The country also has a President, but this position is ceremonial, as the Prime Minister performs most of the duties of the executive branch. The President does, however, appoint the Prime Minister. The President is elected by the legislature.
The legislative body of the government of Bangladesh is a parliament known as the Jatiyo Sangshad. The people of the country elect the parliament members every five years. Anyone who is 18 or older and a citizen of Bangladesh can vote in these elections.
Bangladesh also has a judicial branch, which is led by the country's Supreme Court. The justices are appointed by the President at the Prime Minister's recommendation. Many of the laws in Bangladesh are religious in nature.
Bangladesh enjoys a tropical climate. The winter months, which stretch from October to March, are relatively mild, but the summer months, from March to June, are quite hot and humid. The area is prone to tropical storms during the monsoon season from June to October. Monsoons, tornadoes, or floods happen almost every year, particularly in the coastal regions of the country. Because of the flooding problems, the agricultural industries of the country often suffer during the monsoon season, keeping many of the people in the country from moving forward economically, as two-thirds of the country's population relies on agriculture for their livelihood.
