BANKSY Stencil Street Art and Movie Review
Ranked #3,309 in Arts & Design, #48,961 overall
A review of the movie and a look at BANKSY's works.
As a contemporary artist myself, I have followed Banksy's work over the past couple years and when I found out a movie was being made I was shocked.
For anyone who isn't familiar with this street graffiti artist, he is rather shy and about as hard to find as someone in protective custody. The thought of a movie about him was a grand new idea.
I've picked some of my favorite Bansy images to share with you as well.

Who Is Banksy?
Banksy is an underground graffiti artist that started his career in street art in the 1980's.It is believed that he was born in 1974, and was raised in Bristol, England. Banksy is the moniker of this annonymous graffiti artist that doesn't have to worry about media frenzy.
Some people have noted that his style is similar to Blek le Rat, who made stencil art in paris in 1981. Banksy's stencils feature striking and humorous images somtimes combined with slogans. The message is usually anti-capitalist, anti-war or anti-establishment. His stencils sometimes include rats, policemen, apes, soldiers, children, elderly, and political figures.
Banksy's movie, Exit Through The Gift Shop, won an academy award nomination for Best Documentary in Jan. of 2011.

My Review of, EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP, a Banksy Film
Personal Review
***For those of you who have not seen the movie I'm not going to give any spoilers***
I thought the movie was a great look into the underground scene of graffiti. It showcases some of the top graffiti artists from the past ten years and it gives an insight to a world few have encountered. As a graffiti artist myself, in studio, I could feel the adrenaline pumping in the scenes. I thought that it portrays graffiti in an artistic way that puts it in with other famous art throughout history like: abstractism, impressionism, cubism, ect...This is exactly what Banksy set out to do with this movie, prove that graffiti is an art form that is more than just about money. It's about passion and that can be felt throughout the movie.
I do have to agree that it didn't have the plot that I was expecting but then again we are talking about Banksy, who knows what he is going to do. He takes a movie about himself and turns it into a movie about someone else, you'll have to see to understand. I would definately recommend this movie to anyone that is interested in graffiti art, street art and contemporary art. I would give it two thumbs up and would watch it again a couple more times.
You come away after watching the movie with new insight into the world of graffiti...RWJR

- I recently watch this film and found it fascinating. Previously I knew very little about 'Street Art' and in all honesty I only saw the film by accident but ended up loving it. I did not like all of the street art that the people made but some of it was truly beautiful, clever or thought provoking.

- Yes I liked it, and I wonder if he ever lets certain people see his face....a fellow artist friend of mine who now lives in London had an opportunity to meet him and Banksy wore a mask the whole time.

- This is a terrific film! It's interesting as a look into street art and Banksy's grafitti work... and absolutely fascinating as a discussion of what is and isn't art, of where commerce meets art, and of the idea of "paying dues" as an artist.

- I have seen the movie and really liked it, it was very interesting. My wife and I just recently watched another show that had Mr. Brainwash in it, that guy is kind of crazy. We love Banksy's work and would like to someday be able to see it in person.

The Real Banksy?
Could It Be?
LONDON-At a press conference Tuesday, 89-year-old Rose Biggin, announced that she was Banksy. "Those drawings? Oh, yes, those are mine," said the elderly woman, who admitted to scaling buildings and climbing fences in order to put up life-sized stenciled images that satirize modern society. "It sure does help to pass the time." Biggin then returned home, where along with some of her "dearest friends," she sipped on her tea....click on the picture to go to the actual article in The Onion

Banksy Books
Here are some informative books on Banksy and the graffiti scene.
Make Your Own Stencil Art
Here's the materials you will need to make your own stencil art. I've put everything in one place so it would be easy to get what you need without having to look everywhere. The basic materials are clear stencil sheets, an x-acto knife and a little patience from you. There are books on how to do different levels of stencils using more and more layers. Starting out though you can get by with two stencils, one for the dark color and one for the lighter color. Most of Banksy's stencils are only two to three layers at most. You need to pick some decent paint, there's nothing like cheap watery paint dripping on you when you don't want it to. I've picked some good basic paint that works very well.Good luck on creating you own stencil art and let me know how it went...RWJR

First Step Clear Stencil Sheets
Cut And Spray
Here's one of the main ingredients in a good stencil art project. It's always good to use material like these heavy duty plasic sheets to keep the stencil from breaking over time. I can't tell you how many stencils I tore in the beginning making them out of paper or other quick and easy materials.
Time For Cutting
Stay On the Line
When cutting a stencil make sure you are on a good cutting surface, plastic folding tables make a good surface. Use a new blade frequently for the best cuts.
Last Thing To Do Is Spray It
Montana Gold Spray Paint
Montana is one if not the best spray paint on the market. You really get the best quality paint that is easy to control. I picked some nice basic colors..RWJr
