Although we often hear the term Godparent, there are many of us don't really understand what a Godparent is and what their role in the child's life may be

When an infant or child is Baptized their parents choose a Godparent for them.
In the case of an adult being Baptized as in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA), the person who is being Baptized chooses their own Godparents.

But what is the role of a Godparent?
The role of the Godparents is to represent Christian community and also the Church.
Being a Godparent is something that should not be taken lightly but should be felt as a great honor.

The Godparents are there to help the parents raise the child according to the Church's doctrines and to help show by example how to follow and obey the Church's role in the child's life and day to say activities. .

In the case of an adult Baptism, the Godparents will help the adult continue on their goals of leading a good and wholesome life and help the adult continue in their quest for knowledge of the Church.

Remember that when choosing Godparents you should choose those who share your beliefs and will continue to help shape the religious and spiritual life of the person Baptized.

Just because someone is your best friend or relative does not make this person the best choice to be a Godparent. Take into consideration their beliefs as they will be a role model for the Baptized. Remember that they will lead by example, so think about this gift of offering this role only if you are very secure in your choice.
