The White House Dog - Meet Bo
Bo, a 6-month-old Portuguese water dog, was given to Malia and Sasha Obama by Sen. Edward Kennedy.
The Obama Girls chose the name Bo for the pup because first lady Michelle Obama's father was nicknamed Diddley. The name for the dog was an apparent reference to the singer "Bo" Diddley

Thanks to Bo for making it happen
I want to thank Bo for making this lens become as popular as it is. The hype over the First Dog has been huge. Maybe we all just needed to take a break from everything else going on in the world and focus on our furry friends who also need us.I created this lens originally to focus on the fact the President was rescuing a dog and the importance of that and that is something I know very well being the owner of 9 rescues myself.
So thank you to all who have helped this lens get the honor of being LOTD and I hope it may inspire some to go out and rescue a furry pet of your own.

First lady jokes new puppy is 'kind of crazy'
- Michelle Obama Talks about the First Dog
- First dog Bo is a "kind of crazy" puppy who likes to chew on people's feet, Michelle Obama told children visiting the White House on Thursday.
The first lady is spending a lot of time walking and training the 6-month-old Portuguese water dog who became a member of the president's family last week.
An energetic breed, Bo plays well into the night, as he did on Wednesday.
"It was like 10 o'clock. Everybody was asleep and we hear all this barking and jumping around," Mrs. Obama said. "The president and I came out and we thought somebody was out there. And it was just Bo. He was playing with his ball. And it was like there was another person in the house.

Bemidji dog is half-sister of Obama familys Bo
A Bemidji family has a White House canine connection.Ruby, a 2-year-old Portuguese water dog owned by Julie Quanrud and her husband, Ric Meixell, is the half-sister of President Barack Obama's new family dog, Bo.
"I was suspicious because the muzzle is the same," Quanrud said, adding that she became even more suspicious when she saw the Obama family's dog had the exact same white markings as Julius, a full sibling of Ruby's.

- Is Bo a rescued dog or not? Did President Obama keep or break a campaign promise in picking the purebred as the family's new pet?

The Dog Choices were narrowed down - BUT it seems the Portuguese Water Dog won the choice.
The Obamas had narrowed down the choice of the White House puppy to a Labradoodle or Portuguese water dog. Both breeds generally shed less fur than some other kinds of dogs - Malia is allergic to dog hair
Mrs Obama and the girls started their search with Washington's animal shelters for the puppy their father promised them during his November 4 victory speech.
The Obamas had also asked for rugs and flooring that can withstand scratching .

About Portuguese Water Dogs
Portuguese Water Dogs are a breed of water dog similar to poodles. PWDs are highly intelligent, have curly coats, and do not shed. However, unlike Poodles, Portuguese Water Dogs are robustly built, with stout legs, and their tails are left naturally long and undocked. They have webbed toes, for swimming, which one can notice by trying to pass one's finger between the dog's toes. Their eyes are brown, and their coats can be black, reddish brown, white, or black and white. A Book on Portuguese Water Dogs

Amazon Price: $5.94 (as of 02/15/2012)![]()
The seafaring wonder known as the Portuguese Water Dog has made an unprecedented splash in the American dog world. An exceptional diver and swimmer, the Portuguese Water Dog excels in sports in the water and on land, a true working dog of unique ability.
About Labradoodles
Labradoodles' hair can be anywhere from wiry to soft, and may be straight, wavy, or curly. Some Labradoodles do shed, although the coat usually sheds less and has less dog odor than that of a Labrador Retriever. The color range includes white, cream, gold, apricot, red, brown and black, and most of the other colors seen in Poodles.
Like most Labrador Retrievers and Poodles, Labradoodles are generally friendly, energetic and good with families and children (although as with any dog the temperament may vary between individuals). Labradoodles also often display an affinity for water and the strong swimming ability present in both their parent breeds.
Like their parent breeds, both of which are amongst the world's most intelligent dog breeds, Labradoodles are very intelligent and quite trainable.

- Your rescue pups are wonderful. I have to be careful here, so I will be very polite. I do think President Obama broke a promise. There are shelter dogs that do not cause allergies. My shelter dog "Bo" would rather have had his namesake be another rescue pup. Saving the life of a dog in a shelter would have been a wiser choice for Mr. Obama. Whew, it was hard to reply nicely. I am spent.

- And a good question...Will they actually put Bo in the "traditional" haircut or a Portuguese Water Dog? I still think they should have gotten a hairless Chinese Crested if they were worried about allergies, but maybe thats just me since I have one :D
