The Surf Breaks in Barbados

Far out in the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean island of Barbados is uniquely located to allow for ideal surfing conditions at the many Barbados surf breaks. Waves traverse the ocean from the west coast of Africa for a long, uninterrupted time before unleashing with awe-inspiring power on the eastern and southern coasts of the island. With a coastline surrounded by coral reef, Barbados provides ideal surf from all angles and directions (though the eastern and southern coasts are best for tourists due to accommodations), making it a top destination for surfers all year long.

Surf Spots in Barbados Along The East Coast

The famed east coast of Barbados is revered in the surfing world as one of the most consistent and gnarly places for large-wave riding in the Caribbean. International superstar and 10-time world championship surfer Kelly Slater advocates the most popular of all the Barbados surf breaks , "Soup Bowl" as it's known to surfers, as one of the top three waves in the entire world! Waves here are not for novice or the faint of heart! Bathsheba is the name of the region of the east coast that caters to surfers, and is very spare and quaint compared to the more tourist-catering beaches. Other surf breaks along this coast include Box-by-Box, Parlors and High Rock.

Surf Spots in Barbados Along The South Coast

The south coast of Barbados features some of the most consistent and impressive surf in the Caribbean. Surf spots approaching the southern point of the island offer surfers waves ranging from gentle to very challenging. These waves are available almost any day the year round due to consistent swells and trade winds affecting the island, an attractive feature for the globe-trotting beginner surfer who can only travel certain dates. Longboarders will feel right at home close to the cliff at Freights Bay riding clean easy to ride waves. Nearby, South Point is home to one of the most consistent intermediate waves. If the other Barbados surf spots are dead, and the rare times where waves are scarce elsewhere on the island's south coast, South Point is almost a sure bet for having a swell. Also on the south coast, is the area of Inchcape, a tourist , and home to Surfer's Point. Visitors love to stand on their villa balconies or on beaches as beginner longboarders and surfers try to out-do one another.

Surf Spots in Barbados Along The North West Coast

On the northwest coast, Barbados surf breaks are not any milder than Soup Bowl, when conditions are ripe, and offers beautiful white sand beaches and unaltered tree-lined coastline. A lot of waves here are easier to access than those on the north, with Duppies and Maycocks being the two most popular.

Surf Spots in Barbados Along The West Coast

Further down the western coast, there is a point break off of Gibbs and the reef break Tropicana. During low tide, these surf spots are to be avoided, due to the dangerous and sharp, fire coral reefs that threaten to slice at fallen riders. When the surf's up along this coast of the island, during the winter season, there are generally moderate to large sized waves and great tubes for mid-level riders to professionals during the winter season.

All told, sitting southernmost in the Caribbean island chain, Barbados surf breaks are growing in world popularity as an ideal vacation spot for professional and novice riders alike. Start planning your vacation in Barbados!
