My Barbados Vacation-Barbados Vacation On The Island In The Sun

Barbados was first populated by the Arawak who traveled from Venezuela and made it their home. Around 1200 the Carib invaded the island and conquered the Arawak. After conquering the Arawak the Carib where made to be slaves by the Spanish who invaded in 1492. While being made to be slaves the Carib also caught the small pox and cease to exist as a people. With Spain deserting Barbados it was now free and open for england to colonize. After colonizing the island sugar cane was introduced as a crop and so started slavery. From 1644 to 1700 men and women were taken from Africa and forced to work on sugar plantations. In 1834 slavery was abolished in Barbados and independence from england was given in 1966.

The people of Barbados call themselves Bajans and speak with a distinct accent. Although just a small island the people of Barbados are in the top percentile of literacy in the world and has a great education system. Some of the people you might know from Barbados are Rhiana and Sir Garfield Sobers.

Part of the culture of Barbados is the crop over festival. Every year at the end of the sugar cane harvesting season bajans and tourist dance and sing to calypso music. Steel pan drums can be heard all around and the colorful costumes the people wear are amazing. If you like music,exotic settings and having a good time the Barbados crop over festival is recommended.

When it comes to beaches in Barbados all i can say is wow. The feeling i got walking along the beach was like paradise. The water was crystal clear and the beach sandy and beautiful i did not want to leave. Most of my time was spent laying around the beach and watching the sun set against the shore. I have been to many beaches around the world and Barbados rates in the my top three.
