Bestselling Home-Business Author Now Exploring New Writing and Self-Publishing Challenges

After nearly four decades of leadership in the home business industry as an author, newsletter publisher, and speaker, Barbara has now withdrawn from active involvement in the general home business field (been there, done that), preferring instead to expand her book manuscript editing and critiquing services for authors and self-publishers, while also writing and publishing some new non-business books of her own.

Barbara's trade books include Homemade Money and Creative Cash, both of which have achieved classic status in their respective fields. In print since 1984 and long recommended by U.S. Small Business Administration specialists, Homemade Money was for many years used as a text in entrepreneurial courses across the country. After four editions and 128,000 copies in print, this classic guide was last updated and released by M. Evans in 2003 as a two-volume edition. (See Barbara's website for content details.)

Creative Cash, a classic in its field for more than thirty years, has helped thousands of creative people launch successful art or craft businesses at home. In fact, several people who started a business with an earlier edition of this book in hand ended up as featured success stories in the last (6th) edition. Barbara's other crafts business books include Handmade for Profit (see related blog below), The Craft Business Answer Book, and Make It Profitable.

2010 Perspective on Barbara's Home-Business Books

All of my books published between 1979-2006 remain available on Amazon (along with all their outdated earlier editions listed by used booksellers which should not be purchased). Changing technology and Web marketing practices have made some sections of even the latest editions of my books outdated, but I will not be updating any of these books again. What remains timeless in each of my books, however, is its sage GENERAL business and marketing advice from me and the many business pros and experts who shared their advice in it. (For each of my books, I generally interviewed and picked the brains of between fifty and a hundred home-business pros, industry leaders, and other experts.) Thus in every one of my books, you will find timeless and perhaps priceless business and diversification ideas, management tips, marketing secrets, and many tips on how to stay out of legal or financial trouble. For detailed content information on all of my books, along with many related articles, visit Barbara Brabec's World.

Self-Employed since 1971

Barbara's experience includes twenty years as an editor and publisher, first of a crafts business magazine (1971-1976), then of a subscription newsletter for home-business owners (1981-1996). During these years she was also a featured columnist for several magazines. Her "Selling what You Make" (later renamed "Profits") column ran in Crafts magazine for twenty years, becoming at that point the longest-running column of its kind.

Before starting her present publishing business in 1981, Barbara was for two years publisher and general manager of the book division of Barrington Press, Inc., which coincidentally published the first edition of her Creative Cash book. In this capacity, she was directly responsible for the book's initial sales success, and it was the overwhelming response to this book that convinced her she should start her own publishing business at home. She launched that business at the age of 42 with a thousand dollars borrowed from savings, and says it was the smartest career decision she ever made.

Much of her business management experience came as a result of working for ten years in corporate offices in Chicago prior to becoming self-employed. However, she is entirely self-taught in all other areas of business and marketing, writing, periodical and book publishing, teaching, speaking, editing, eBook design and publication, using computers and related technology, designing and managing a website, and, most recently print-on-demand (POD) publishing.. She believes that anyone who can read--and apply what they've learned--can achieve success in their chosen field. Her greatest strength as a leader and home-business adviser is that she has personally experienced most of the things she writes about.

Through the years, Barbara's professional viewpoints have been included in several books by other authors. Frequently quoted in the national press as a home-business expert, she has has given countless radio and newspaper interviews. Aticles by and about her have been published in dozens of small-business periodicals and today may be found on numerous sites on the Web.

Barbara's years of experience in the crafts industry led to her being chosen to be the Series Editor for Prima Publishing's line of For Fun & Profit books published in 1999-2000. Her continuing interest in this industry prompted her to launch a crafts blog in 2009 to help creative people cash in on their creativity (see below).

Barbara was married for nearly 44 years to Harry Brabec, a legendary Chicago percussionist and crafts show producer who died in February, 2005. In his later years, he assisted her in her work and always kept her laughing. His home-business humor has been included in several editions of Barbara's books and and is featured in the memoir she published about her life with him in April 2010. (See The Drummer Drives! Everybody Else Rides, below.) This book is Barbara's first venture into the world of print-on-demand (POD) publishing, but she says it won't be her last. Her new goal is to publish several POD books in the coming years. None of them are likely to be about business.

My First Print-on-Demand Book

The Drummer Drives! Everybody Else Rides--The Musical Life and Times of Harry Brabec, Legendary Chicago Symphony Percussionist and Humorist

Harry J. Brabec (1927-2005) was a percussionist and virtuoso snare drummer greatly admired by his peers not only for his talents as a musician, but for his keen sense of humor and gutsy approach to life. His name became legend when, at the peak of his career as Principal Percussionist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1956, Fritz Reiner dismissed him for purely personal reasons, effectively destroying his career and leading to the failure of his first marriage.

Barbara met and married Harry in 1961. Beat by beat in this autobiographic narrative and biography, she tells his comeback story as a freelance percussionist in Chicago in the sixties, then flashes back to his career before they met before going on to tell how her career path and their marriage changed when life forced Harry to move in new entrepreneurial directions in the seventies and beyond.

The Drummer Drives! offers a unique view of a colorful period of Chicago's musical entertainment history that is spiced with romance, drama, and Harry's wit and humor. The book revolves around the author's lifetime of journals and Harry's scrapbooks and nostalgic letters, which are filled with historical "music biz" stories and remembrances of the days when he was playing with the big bands and doing recordings in Chicago; his comments about many of the musicians, entertainers, and conductors he worked with; his thoughts on being Czech; his love of good food, fine books, record collecting, band music and the circus; and how he felt about getting old and being forced to lay down his sticks because of ill health. The book also includes colorful anecdotes shared by many musicians who knew and worked with Harry.

There is much to enjoy in this informative and humor-laden memoir, but you may also find yourself tearing up at times as you read this honestly-told story of the author's unusual life journey with a man who was "no ordinary Joe," an individual so complex that she was still trying to figure him out after nearly 44 years of marriage and five years as his widow.

Receive my Brabec Bulletins by Email

THE BRABEC BULLETIN has been published since 2000, sometimes as an ezine, sometimes as a monthly Web Bulletin, sometimes both, depending on how much time and energy I have had to devote to it. It remains a labor of love and continues to be published irregularly as time allows. As I continue to build a new life for myself both as a widow and aging entrepreneur on the Web, my Bulletin has become more personal in nature.

Many of my newer readers have no idea that I produced a crafts magazine from 1971-1976 and a print newsletter for home business owners from 1981-1995. This was long before I had a computer, back in the "dark ages" where everything had to be done on a typewriter and glued to boards for the printer. My newsletter had different names and formats through the years, but I never missed an issue, even though my husband and I moved a dozen times in that period of our life and were both hospitalized several times as well. (Anyone who thinks it's easy to run a business at home around all of "life's little interruptions" is in for a big surprise.)

I love the Internet, but I very much miss the warmth of the mail I used to receive from publicity mentions and from readers of my print newsletter and various magazine column--usually 25,000 letters or more a year. Some letters were typed, of course, but most of my mail in those days came from business beginners who sent charming handwritten notes, cards or letters. Often, there were enclosures of their newly-printed brochure, flyer or business card. Email is wonderful, but it just can't compare to correspondence you can hold in your hand. Something that gives me special pleasure today, however, is that at least some of my ezine subscribers and website readers are folks who have been with me through thick and thin over many years. We have a shared history of "the good old days" that no amount of technology can replace, and I value these friendships very much.

Looking for Something Different?

There are a LOT of home-business ezines out there today, and most people get more mail into their Inbox than they have time to read. But if you want to learn from someone who has been successfully self-employed since 1965, has some strong opinions about many things because of this experience, and continues to learn new things about life, work, business, and working on the Web nearly every day, then join my Brabec Bulletin mailing list to keep learning along with me as I continue to "work the Web," explore new ground, and discuss topics prompted by my reader mail and telephone networking with other business owners.

To get a better idea of my very personal writing style and the kind of topics I've been discussing lately, read the "Sampler Issue" on my Website and then click the link there to subscribe and get the next Brabec Bulletin by email. Of course your email address will never be sold, and you can always unsubscribe with one click.

Learn How to Cash in on Your Creativity!

Launched in February, 2009, the Handmade for Profit WordPress blog was originally designed to be a place where I would publish a growing collection of business posts, personal updates, feature articles, and resources. But I didn't know then that, in November of that year, my muse would suddenly strike and I would begin the writing of the most important book of my life--the one I've written about above. For six months I did nothing but work on the writing, editing, design, and typesetting of that book, leaving me no time at all for this blog.

In mid-2010, I decided that I could no longer give this site much attention, preferring instead to devote my time to my personal domain (Barbara Brabec's World), my book manuscript editing and critiquing services, and the writing and publishing of new books. Rather than close the site however, I am simply hoping that readers will benefit from the many articles and resources it now contains.

Don't Let the Taxman Keep Your Hard-Earned Money!

Check Out Barbara's "Secrets to Maximizing Schedule C Deductions" Ebook

NEWS RELEASE: Want to Lower the Amount of Self-Employment Taxes You're Paying? Here are Tips from Home Business Maven, Barbara Brabec

Barbara Brabec is the author of Secrets to Maximizing Schedule C Deductions, an eBook specifically written to help Schedule C filers who are tired of giving so much of their home-business profits to the IRS in the form of self-employment taxes.

"In talking with home-business owners nationwide," says Barbara, "I've learned that most have no idea at all of the many tax advantages of a homebased business. They think they are doing everything right when they hire a tax preparer, accountant or CPA to do their taxes, but if they haven't kept track of all their expenses in the first place, they will end up paying higher taxes than necessary. I've worked with several different CPAs through the years, and none of them ever suggested that I might be overlooking a deduction. Always so busy at tax time, they just took the figures I gave them and dropped them in the appropriate slots on the tax forms, often making mistakes in the process.

"Even when you believe you have a qualified tax preparer or accountant, you may have problems simply because tax regulations are so complicated, so confusing, and often so vague that they can be interpreted in different ways. While an aggressive accountant may interpret a particular tax rule in such a way that it becomes a valuable tax deduction for you, a more conservative accountant might say, 'I wouldn't take this deduction if I were you because ... .' (which could cost you the loss of a legal tax deduction if you're less than savvy about taxes).

Brabec warns that it's simply not prudent to put all your faith and trust in your tax adviser. "You must do your homework if you want to claim every legal Schedule C tax deduction to which you are entitled," she emphasizes. "If you're serious about saving money, and aren't an expert on taxes, you need to inform yourself on this topic. Always waiting until the last minute in April to think about your tax situation is a BIG mistake because there are things you could be doing throughout the year, and especially at the end of each year, to lower the amount of self-employment taxes you'll have to pay on April 15. I know the topic of taxes is considered boring to most business owners, but saving money isn't a boring topic, and this book isn't boring, either," Barbara concludes.

Barbara's eBook is ". . .humorous, entertaining and chock full of tax tips and information to help you improve your bottom line," says Bill Ronay, Events2000.com. "It's extremely detailed, yet written in a way every home business owner can understand," says - Susan Scheid, SmallBizCommunity.com

Secrets to Maximizing Schedule C Deductions is a 62-page PDF eBook ($27) for U.S. taxpayers who file a Schedule C form. Add this information-packed eBook (tax deductible, of course) to your eBook library today to be alerted to tax deductions you haven't been taking in the past, learn how to avoid costly IRS tax pitfalls, and perhaps save hundreds or thousands of dollars in taxes not only this year, but every year in the future.
