Barbra Streisand
Streisand: Live In Concert
This two-disc set, which pulls performances from dates in New York, Washington, D.C., and Fort Lauderdale, will raise its share of goosebumps. For longtime fans, they'll be a reaction to songs Streisand hasn't touched since the '70s and earlier, including "(Have I Stayed) Too Long At the Fair?" and "Unusual Way," from the Broadway musical Nine. For relative newbies, they'll be a response to her between-song patter, which touches with grace, wit, and sincerity on everything from her love for her son to her political leanings to her limitations as songwriter. The voice, of course, enthralls--there it is glowing on "Carefully Taught," one of four songs that have never before appeared on a Streisand recording, and there it is again wrapping luxurious tones all around "Evergreen," one of three songs she shares with Il Divo. Streisand--diva, political dynamo, superstar--still knows how to orchestrate a showstopper. -- Tammy La Gorce

Barbra Streisand has released six lives albums / CDs during her prodigeous career, each one unique in representing her at specific times in her legendary journey as an entertainer and artist. This new recording is a more casual and nostalgic affair than anything she's done live, and is much the better for it. While "Live in Concert 2006" shows a bit of "wear and tear" in her vocal ability, that's like saying Maria Callas hit a wrong note. Streisand is now 65 and still doing it her way. What she may have lost in range and suppleness as the result of age, she more than makes up for with her interpretive skills and her pitch-perfect phrasing. This lady knows how to deliver a song like no one alive.
What's most exciting about this CD is that the song selection almost completey ignores more obvious choices (we've gotten them on other dics...now was the time to stretch and, boy, did she) for songs she has rarely performed or has never recorded before. The opening overture, which is the complete overture from her classic Broadway show "Funny Girl", let's you know you are in for some time capsule offerings that no one else could surpass. In fact, many songs from "Funny Girl" permeate the disc, as do several esoteric songs Streisand recorded earlier in her career that were exquisite non-hits. Brilliant.
Yes, there's the obligatory duets with Il Divo, but Streisand has always managed to channell her old-time glamour into one or another of the current pop crop, almost always with sterling results (Neil Diamond, Donna Summer, Johnny Mathis, Barry Gibbs...and the list goes on). Streisand's show business savvy has continued to make her relevant to generation after generation.
Finally, Streisand's in-between-song patter is a real treat here. Less formal and polemic than on other recordings, she is humorous, warm, folksy and quite self-deprecating. A delightful performance.
Streisand will hopefully continue to record for years to come because this CD proves that her talent is not only still intact, but relevant and delightfully dextrous. Lucky for the record buying public. -- Music Man (Boston MA)

The narrative is one of direct, sometimes showy, emotion giving way to empty displays of technique. By 1983's icky anthem "A Piece of Sky," Streisand has plowed under the light touches of "Lover, Come Back to Me" and the triumphal Central Park version of "Happy Days Are Here Again." Where she produced schlock masterworks when teamed with Neil Diamond ("You Don't Bring Me Flowers") and Donna Summer ("Enough Is Enough") in the '70s, a diva summit with Celine Dion led to the car wreck of 1997's "Tell Him." Essential wraps up with previously unreleased takes of "Someday My Prince Will Come" and "You'll Never Walk Alone." -- Rickey Wright

ESSENTIAL BARBRA STREISAND is a great product for the new Streisand fan. For the fan (like me) who already has all of her albums, the bonus tracks are the main reason I got this 2-disk CD. The CD package is very nice, and includes some rare photos that I've never seen before.
I'm sure everyone has ideas about what should or should not have been included. I'm happy with the choices, although at this point in my Streisand fandom I would appreciate more "live" or unreleased versions of songs rather than the same studio versions that have appeared on all of Barbra's "Greatest Hits" albums (I and II, Memories, A Collection, and Just For The Record).
It is truly amazing that Barbra has recorded in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and into the 2000's. ESSENTIAL BARBRA STREISAND proves that she achieves greatness when her material is good. She started with pop and theater standards and seems to be ending her career by a return to these standards. One could argue that the new version of "Someday My Prince Will Come" succeeds artistically as compared to "I Finally Found Someone (Duet with Bryan Adams)".
Barbra Streisand is my favorite recording artist. My wish for this year-long celebration of her anniversary with Columbia Records is to have a new CD that features unreleased and live recordings. I'd love to hear "official", pristine recordings of the Daniel Ellsberg concert, the abandoned Back To Broadway sessions, the abandoned Broadway Album songs, the various songs she's recorded but never released (like "When The Lovin Goes Out of the Lovin"), and all of her original singles from the 60's that featured different arrangements from the album versions. There's some more officially released singles, not on any albums, that we should hear too! As well as the French EP songs like "Les Enfants Qui Pleurent" and "Et La Mer".
Thanks for the new album, Barbra! -- Matt Howe "outloud98" (Washington, DC)

A Star Is Born Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson
The romantic/musical pairing of Streisand and Kris Kristofferson (chosen when no less than Elvis Presley turned the role down) may have been one of the era's strangest but, anchored by Streisand's elegant, Oscar-winning hit theme "Evergreen," it nonetheless yielded the biggest-selling album of the singer's career to date. That neither star is particularly convincing as rock icons--particularly Her Divaness--seems beyond the point of this fable. Instead, both stars take the opportunity to stretch outside their usual personas a bit, Streisand with the R&B teaser "Queen Bee" and confessional "Woman of the Moon," Kristofferson on rousing, theatrical fare like "Watch Closely Now" and "Hellacious Acres." -- Jerry McCulley
A Star Is Born
1. Watch Closely Now
2. Queen Bee
3. Everything
4. Lost Inside of You
5. Hellacious Acres
6. Love Theme From ' A Star Is Born' (Evergreen)
7. The Woman In The Moon
8. I Believe In Love
9. Crippled Crow
10. Finale: With One More Look At You/Watch Closely Now
11. Reprise: Love Theme From ''A Star Is Born' (Evergreen)
This soundtrack to the film blockbuster (which became the second highest grossing movie of that year) was also an enormous success itself, spending six weeks at #1 and selling over four million copies in the US alone. A monster hit, the film is entertaining and moving, and this is reflected in the soundtrack. A STAR IS BORN is at it's best during Streisand's seven numbers, which feature astonishingly powerful vocals that resonate in the memory even long after the disc has ended.
The Streisand-penned composition "Evergreen" (with lyrics by Paul Williams), with it's haunting melody and classical-style timbre (very typical of her work), is one of the grandest pop records ever recorded. Artistic justice was served when the song also became a huge commercial smash, hitting #1 on both the Pop and Adult Contemporary charts and winning several armfuls of awards. The other song with music composed by Streisand, "Lost Inside Of You" (a surprisingly effective duet with leading man Kris Kristofferson), features a similar classical slant and perhaps could have been a hit as well (that is if it had been released as a single). The remainder of the Streisand tracks were recorded live in front of an audience ("Evergreen" and "Lost Inside Of You" were also recorded live, but in the studio), and these amazing performances will make listeners wish Streisand had given more concerts in the seventies.
Some of this material (especially Rupert Holmes' "Queen Bee") is second-rate and forgettable, but even then Streisand's vocals make them more memorable than they deserve to be. My favorite concert selections are the scorching "Woman In The Moon" and the heart-stopping medley "With One More Look At You/Watch Closely Now." On the downside, the disc has a somewhat disjointed feel (typical of pop-oriented soundtracks) and Kristofferson's three solo numbers are monotonous and sound out of tune. However, Streisand's vocals are fabulous and will make this a must-own for fans. -- Robert Johnson (Richmond, KY USA)
