Decorating on a Dime

Decorating with champagne taste on a Kool-Aid budget can be frustrating. You don't have to always buy new. Consider thrift stores or yard sales. And what's more, you don't have to buy anything at all. Look around and use what you have. Home accessories and decor don't have to be expensive at all when you use this guide to inexpensive bargain basement décor.

Paint It

Using what you have is another way to stretch your décor dollar. Perhaps you like what you have but the look feels stale and tired. Many interior decorators will tell you the best way to liven up a room is to give it a fresh coat of paint. Painting a room can change the whole look and feel, giving it a sense of newness and rebirth. Pulling subtle colors out of the upholstery will not only liven up the walls but complements the furniture's as well.

Rearrange It

To open up a basement, often, less is more. Arranging the furnishings for display, more than for function can help showcase a room. When creating a look, choose a focal point with one chair or table that stands out from the rest of the furnishings, letting the room spread out from there. One very interesting idea is the use of books as décor, stacked symmetrically on the end tables. In basements that are small and lack adequate lighting, the use of mirrors along one wall will create the illusion of space and also produce reflective light, giving any room a bright and cheerful look.

Art

Wall ArtFinding wall art to display for your home can be affordable. One of the greatest places to find unique prints is the thrift store. Bins after bins of empty frames and prints can be found-and if you can't find both, there you can always improvise. Making art can be a fun project to, adding a splash of color to the room if you can't paint the walls. Here is an art project you can make with fabric remnants and stretched canvas, you will need;

A three pack of cheap stretched canvas, can be purchased at any hobby or crafting store
Enough fabric to stretch around the frame completely
Hot glue gun
Upholstery tacks

When choosing the colors, coordinate them with colors found in the drapes and furniture. Begin by measuring and trimming fabric to the canvas and wrap around to the back of the wood framing. For an extra feature, you may add a layer of left over batting or poly fiber fill between the cloth and the canvas, in doing so this will absorb the ambient noise in the room. Hot glue the fabric to the back and add decorative upholstery tacks to the edge. Hang wall decoration 5 to 7 inches apart about eye level approximately 70 inches from the floor.
