Dream Weddings at a Bargain

Ranked #19,093 in Education, #379,920 overall

Plan your dream wedding at a bargain.

Having an elegant or celebrity-style wedding doesn't have to mean incurring a hefty price tag. With careful planning, researching and preparation, you can plan your dream wedding at a price you can afford.

To keep your wedding costs down, a budget is absolutely essential in planning your wedding. Costs can quickly get out of your control, so if you don't plan for and document your expenses, you may end up paying far more for your wedding than you planned. Your budget will determine many factors of your wedding such as the number of guests you can invite, the ceremony location and reception size, location, and menu.

Your first step is in determining your total budget figure. How much can you afford to spend on your wedding? What is your bottom-line amount? Once you have this figure in mind, the book, Bridal Bargains, suggests that you then start with identifying your priorities. You, your fiancee, and your parents (if they are helping to pay for the wedding) should sit down with a piece of paper and draw up a list of priorities, then rank each category in the order of importance from one (least important) to 9 (most important).

Now compare your worksheets and discuss and agree on the overall ranking of priorities. This will help you in allocating your dollars on your budget. You want to spend a larger part of your budget on the higher priority items. Now you can begin allotting your money to correspond with your priorities.

Where You Can Save and Where You Shouldn't

Every bride wants to have an unforgettable wedding, but not every bride can afford to spend $27,000, which, according to WeddingCost.com, is the average wedding cost in the United States. So can you have a beautiful, unforgettable wedding for less? Of course you can. It just takes research, careful planning, and a budget.

When the reception ends and all the guests go home, what do you have to show for your wedding? The rings, gown, photos and video. You'll pack away the gown, but your friends and family with see the ring, photos and video untold times over the decades. So you don't want to skimp on these items.

This doesn't mean that you can't still save money on these items. One area you can save in is the guest list. By trimming the guest list, you can save on your reception costs. Also, look at your menu. Is there something more practical, yet delicious that you can serve instead of a fancy dish? Whatever you serve, be sure it's quality food.

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Budgets - Many brides dream of their wedding day years before even being engaged. It's very easy to get excited about your wedding date and quickly add up the costs by making all kinds of purchases before determining your budget. Then, you can quickly run out of money for necessary deposits and final payments. You want to prepare a practical budget early and manage it by keeping an accurate account of your spending.

Selecting the Venue first - You shouldn't choose your wedding reception venue too early. You need to first decide how many guests you plan on inviting and your budget amount. Once you've determined this information, you can select the appropriate reception venue. You will then be sure you have the correct size facility and that you don't go over your budget amount.

Lack of Schedules - When you first begin planning your wedding, you may begin to feel overwhelmed. Some of you may feel that way now. Trying to figure out where to start, what to do and when can create stress. This is an area that a timeline can assist in relieving. Without a timeline and a wedding day agenda, you don't know where to start or what to do next and you are sure to miss important details or run out of time.

Inviting too many guests - Over-inviting guests and estimating too high the number who will not attend can only lead to disaster. As a rule of thumb, expect that 80% of the people you invite WILL attend. So whittle down you guest list to an acceptable and affordable number.

Expecting Perfection - As many a bride soon discovers, there are a number of things that can go wrong on your wedding day. If you're planning an outdoor wedding, the weather may not cooperate. You flower girl or ring bearer may refuse to walk down the aisle. Have a back-up plan in mind before you get to that point.
