What is barkcloth fabric?

The original barkcloth fabric was precisely that, a strong fabric resulting from beating the bark of certain trees into thin sheets. Barkcloth of this sort was commonly used in tropical locations by native populations.

From the 1930s on, however, "barkcloth" has referred to a nubby cotton or poly-cotton fabric with dense fibers. This type of barkcloth is typically associated with 1940s post-war tiki and 1950s Mid-Century Modern home decor design; the usual fabric motifs of that time period are atomic or tropical.

For those who are redecorating, cotton barkcloth is being reproduced for use in home furnishings upholstery.
