Barn Owls In North America

The Barn Owl is an owl that is part of the Family Tytonidae, or Barn Owls. There are 17 species, and this type of owl only is in North America. They have long legs, and a lot of feathers. Since they are often more in less frigid areas of North America, they are mostly seen across the middle sections of The United States.

They are the owls you often see pictured, and are very dark and round eyes. They are in forests, and hardwood areas. Increasingly with these areas disappearing, they are taking to marshes and grasslands due to small habitats and changing environments.

Your main Barn Owl, the Tyto alba, is around 18 inches long, and have a crow sized physical appearance. They are brown in color, and white as well. The have a distinctive heart shaped face that includes many thin dark dots on the white areas.

Barn Owls in America

Our Chief Mouse Catcher

White Captive Barn OwlA Barn Owl population will quickly destroy your mouse population within a few weeks. Sometimes, there are too many owls, so the owls will not reproduce to provide enough time for those clever mice to reestablish themselves. It does not take long, as mice can grow from a set of two, to they themselves producing 48 in only a years time. And, with that same year, those baby mice can reproduce themselves within a few weeks, so actually your chances of two mice, in good conditions, will reproduce to a number of thousands, when you include their babies.

So, it is a good thing we have Barn Owls. The heart shape look of them is enduring, but do not let that fool you. They are predators, and will quietly remove as many as 6 mice in an hour.

The Call of the Barn Owl

It is something you will need to focus on hearing

A Beautiful Barn OwlOften times, in the early evening, you can hear the Barn Owl call, but only if you concentrate on the calls. The call is a distinctive hissing noise, some guttural screams and grunting noises, and sometimes a beak snapping closed. They like to talk to each other, and to their young. The babies have a more cute clicking call.

If you are interested in hearing their calls, be sure to check out the itunes section below!

Owls are Your Best Rodent Control

Mousers are not just cats

Barn Owl With A MouseWe all think our cats are the best mouse traps, but if you look at the parameters around an owl nest, you will find that the areas are pest free. Rodents, bugs, and other small reptiles will have been slowly exterminated from the area. The mother owl, will often fly longer distances when she can afford the flight, to save the local pests for her slower or bad weather days. There are many reasons for you to incorporate a barn owl nest box in your area, but the best one is that these birds are great at natural predation.

Owls have been a predator across the globe for centuries. Now that there are fewer and fewer areas where they can nest, it is becoming more apparent that there are more mice and rodents in the area. With careful guidance, a few owl nest boxes can remove most of your snakes, large rodents, and other pests in your local area. They never over populate, and are always a very valuable addition to your farm or local suburban property.

The Barn Owl

A very common Owl!

Barn Owl Sweet Face

If you have a sweet tooth, you may want to allow a barn owl into your heart. They have the sweetest face with a heart shaped ridge of feathers, that frames their pinched in look! The best hair cut ever on an owl!

The barn owl is one of the most prevalent owls to grace the planet, and is always found in a structure or an old building, just like its name implies. The other owl that is very common is the Short-eared Owl, and this owl too, is one that likes to take advantage of easy habitat. The owls that do not insist on being picky in their places of residence, seem to do the best.

If you are so kind, and put up an Owl Nest Box, you will get a Barn Owl to check it out first. They are very happy to be able to move right in with no construction problems.
