Barnard College

Barnard College was founded in 1889 as the only college in New York City for women. It started out small...classes were held in a rented brownstone and there were only 8 graduates in the first class (1893)

Barnard College remains a small independent women's college, yet also has affiliations with Columbia University. 

The college's motto is "In pursuit of the life of the mind."

Students must take part in a core curriculum entitled "The 9 Ways of Knowing". Essentially, students can choose the course that they want to take in each of these 9 fields (Reason and Value; Social Analysis; Historical Studies; Cultures in Comparison; Laboratory Science; Quantitative and Deductive Reasoning; Language; Literature; Visual and Performing Arts)
