Taking care of Our Equine Friends the BEST Ways possible....Well Planned Horse Barns and Facilities

How to Enjoy a Well Planned Horse Barn & Facility

One of our passions is to help people enjoy the wonderful relationship  of Man & Horse, providing a lifestyle rich in the reward of accomplishment and personal growth. We have assumed a huge responsibilities when we "domesticated" the Horse.  Taking this natural survivor out of its element has put stress and conditions not found in the wild.

The horse, being a Prey Animal, developed the Herd mentality for survival.

When we keep a horse, we become it's Herd Memeber, and that relationship varies depending on who is the Dominate "mare" .
It is important for us to Think like a horse and not expect the Horse to think like a human....
and the more time you can spend with your horse, the stronger that relationship can become.

So if possible, do your best to keep your horse "at home", or at least visit and spend time with the "boarded" horse Daily.

Like I said, It is a major  Responsibility.

It is getting to be fall around the country and time to consider the effect of "cold " weather on our Equine friends.

One thing to keep in mind is the Horse evolved form the Steppes of Asia and is a "cold weather" survivor. Their physiology is geared for Temperature in the 30' to the mid 60's F.

So contrary to some opinions, the Horse may not NEED as much protective gear as thought of by Humans. But most of us are anthropomorphic and want to impose our feeling to the horse.

Adequate shelter should be provided to protect from severe Rain and Wind.

This can be accomplished by simple roofed and sided shelters to full blown Barns. The horse is usually satisfied by a refuge from Rain and strong wind.

We enjoy the full protection of a barn.

Some may wonder why a person in the business of building Barns would go down this path. Well, many customers find it more to their Budget to offer Shelters rather than barns and we provide that service.

If you anywhere in Northern California, Western Nevada or Oregon, give us call. Heck, even if you are from other areas, I would be happy to point out other resources nearby.

Is your Horse being Fed correctly?

How many times a Day should the Confined Horse Eat?

I attended the Western States Horse Expo in Sacramento, Ca, June 6-8, 2008.

This has been a major Expo to stay abreast of the Best and Newest of Horse Care and Housing Products for the past 10 years.

One of the Most interesting Products I came across was a well-made Automatic Horse Feeder, From Stable Grazer in Washington State.

The Owner, Dan Fehringer presented very good arguments for the benefits of this unique System, which returns its investment quickly for the right operation:

Providing horses with good nutrition is essential for normal growth, reproduction and performance. Horses should receive feeds that are adequate but not excessive in required nutrients, but more importantly fed at a normal rate which is co-incident to the horse's natural physiology.

Horse are natural grazer and in the open are typically feeding most of the day and into the night. They have a relatively small Stomach and therefor find it difficult to Eat a Large Amount at once.

The stomach of the horse contains about 10% of the capacity of the intestinal tract compared to about 70% for ruminants. This means the horse's stomach has only 14% the capacity for feed as the mature ruminant and cannot handle large amounts of feed at one time. On the other hand, if the stomach remains empty, the excess gas produced can cause the stomach to rupture, leading to death. Therefore, the horse must eat frequent, small portions of feed to avoid overeating and possible injury from colic, founder, or damage to the stomach.

Once in the horse's stomach, feed passes rapidly into the small intestine. Feeding a large meal limits the mixing action of the stomach and may prevent feed from coming into sufficient contact with gastric secretions in the stomach. This can have a negative effect on feed digestion.

The Stable Grazer is an programmable Automatic feeding System that allow the Horse owner to program up to 6 feedings a day with all types of Hay, Grain and/or Supplements based on a programed schedule.

Results have shown that actually Less feed is used or wasted and the overall health your Equine Friend is enhanced.

For more information on this Product fill in your information and I will be sure you are in touch with Dan and his able Crew.

It's Pesky FLY Time

The never ending Battle

In addition to repellents and other fly-foiling measures, giving your horse access to open, breezy pastures can help keep flies at bay.
Biting Gnats
Black flies (or buffalo gnats) and punkies or no-see-ums are small and often overlooked by horse owners. They can carry parasitic worms, disease organisms and may cause allergic dermatitis.

Use fly repellents containing pyrethrins or pyrethroids, or a combination of the two. Apply to frequently attacked areas, especially the ventral midline (chest and belly) and ears.
Drain marshy areas and make banks of stock tanks and ponds steep to reduce breeding areas.
Allow horses access to more exposed breezy areas
Eye Gnats
Adult Chloropid gnats are non-biting flies but they feed on secretions around a horse's eyes and nose, and have been implicated in the transmission of pink eye, yaws and other diseases.

Good sanitation (see article in Horse & Rider, April 2006) can help reduce breeding sites.
Use repellent wipes, sprays and roll-ons on the horse's face.
Some fly baits can help, but aren't effective as the sole control technique.

Horse and Deer Flies
Horse flies (those big, nasty biting flies up to 1 1/4-inch long) and deer flies (smaller, with black bands across their wings) cause painful bites that can make your horse (and you) miserable.

Pasture horses in breezy, open (non-wooded) areas.
Use fly repellents and wipes.
Drain wet, low-lying areas to reduce breeding areas.
Some fly traps--like Farnam's Epps Biting Fly Trap (farnam.com), or Horse Pal (from Newman Enterprises; bitingflies.com)--are effective.
House Fly
The most common fly pest, house flies love horse manure and the mucous secretions and wounds on horses.

Barn spray systems, traps, feedthroughs, fly parasites, repellents and masts/sheets are all effective.
See the April 2006 issue of Horse & Rider for sanitation and control tips.

Bot Fly
Horse bot flies lay eggs on a horse's coat or skin. When a horse licks his legs, he ingests the eggs, which mature into larvae in the horse's stomach lining.

Treat horses with ivermectins or organophosphates labeled for bot control.
Some feedthroughs (specifically tetrachlorvinphos) can control larval bots.
Apply fly repellents.
Use a bot block, bot knife or even your fingernail to remove the eggs.

I ran a large riding boarding facility in California so I knew what I wanted when I built a barn on my place...Missouri gave me that chance. I built a barn that i was happy being in, and if i was happy then my horses would be happy, safety first, and then comfort...we moved in the winter it was dark where we kept our horses and I made up my mind we would have a great deal of light with ski lights and plexiglass all the way around the top of all the stalls so there was day light, even the doors top to bottom where plastic garage doors that brought in light. after that I designed barns for others....5*
