Through the Eyes of Carracci, Rubens and Caravaggio

The era of Baroque-style painting was born in Italy just before the 17th century, and is considered by many art historians to be the fullest, most robust and detailed before the explosion of the High Renaissance, of which DaVinci and Raphael led the charge.

What separates Baroque from other movements? Well, dramatic scenes with religious overtones in the era of the Dark Ages certainly didn't hurt to popularize it; but more so the rich characterization of religious figures, such as the Biblical tale of David and Goliath. Dark, brooding, haunting; with whatever scrutiny one looks through, Baroque art is INTENSE!

Did I say "INTENSE"?

Nothing Like Bonding with Your Son, eh?

'Saturn Devouring His Son', by Peter Paul Rubens, circa 1636

This is a work by Peter Paul Rubens, entitled 'Saturn Devouring His Son'. It is taken from an ancient Greek myth that prophecized Saturn's overthrow by one of his sons. In the myth, each time Saturn's wife, Rhea, would give birth to a male, he would take the newborn and swallow him. The ever-grieving Rhea, distraught over the loss of all of her children, hid the new child from its father. When Saturn demanded the child, Rhea handed him a rock swaddled in cloth. She then sent her son away for a number of years, and when the young man, Zeus, returned, he fulfilled the prophecy and killed his father, Saturn, and this is how Zeus became foremost of the Greek gods.

Caravaggio's 'Ecce Homo' ('Behold, a Man')

Although I pretty much abhor orthodox religion, and find it difficult to sympathize with those who don't, I can't help but to admire what I consider to be Caravaggio's greatest work. The greatness of this particular piece of art for me personally, is that anyone can relate to the position Jesus is in: head hung low, snobs snickering over his shoulder; knowing the hard times are coming. Who hasn't felt like that at least once in their lives?
