Barry Island

Barry Island (or in Welsh "Ynys y Barri") is technically peninsula and district forming part of the town of Barry.  Barry is loacted in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, roughly 10 minutes away from Cardiff.  The town of Barry was orignially named after the 6th century Saint Baruc.

The peninsula was an island until the 1880s.  It was linked to the mainland as the town of Barry expanded, partly due to the opening of Barry Dock by the Barry Railway Company. The docks now link up the gap which used to form Barry Island.

On Barry Docks, the original dock offices are now used by the county council. The dock offices themselves are one of just a handful of buildings in the world classed as calendar buildings.

There is a railway station still to access the island at Barry Docks.  There is also a heritage rail station which still houses original refurbished steam passenger trains. The rail is always open to the public and annually holds events involving a large steam engine replica of Thomas the Tank Engine.

Along with motor car and bus, taking the train to Barry Island is still a widely available option for people on vacation.

A personal trip to Barry Island

While in Wales, I spent several days at the seaside at Barry Island. The tides bring the water almost up to the shore barriers and then take it 500 feet out, exposing a huge beach.

The peninsular part of the shore is up a craggy rock face and a path stretches all the way out to the tip and back, affording many spectacular shots of the rocks and the ocean. I took about 350 pictures from the beach, the rocks, the hills surrounding, and the beach pier.

This calendar features the best photographs of the ocean, beach, rocks, and paths of Barry Island in the early summer/ late spring months when the sun is shining and there's no rain.

Barry Island Pleasure Park

Barry Island Pleasure Park is an amusement park situated on Barry Island in the Vale of Glamorgan, about 10 miles south of the capital city Cardiff, Wales.

The Pleasure park is surrounded by many shops, bars and restaurants. The Pleasure Park was once famous for its Scenic Railway which dominated half of the site in the early 1900s. This was damaged by strong winds in 1973 some of the materials were used to create the Log flume (which still remains today as one of the parks most popular attractions).

The pleasure park has over 30 rides and attractions, including the Log Flume, Viper Rollercoaster, Sea Ray Pirate Ship, Dodgems and many others. Entrance to the park is free, and ride tickets are available from ticket boxes at the park.

Amusement arcades are located within the pleasure park, and also on the surrounding sea front area, providing games of skill, chance and all sorts of video games.
