Academy of Professional Bartending School - Learn from the Pros
Westchester's Premier Bartending School in New Rochelle,NY
All of which are true. But being a bartender is more than just pouring drinks. Anyone can "pour" a drink. Bar owners actually do care if you can do the job. And do it right. The ideal bartender not only has the right attitude but will be able to make money for the establishment. You should be able to up sell the higher priced inventory to the customers to boost profits. If you're an honest person, you're seldom watched. We are placed in charge of the net income / profit for the establishment. Remember for any hospitality business that serves drinks, approx. 50- 60% of the revenue comes from their liquor sales. So the owners are putting quite a bit of trust in you. No other job offers as much freedom as bartending. We have the authority over many of the staff, we can cut off or kick out unruly people, and we can give away free drinks. It's also about how you interact with your patrons. Go into any bar and observe the bartender then the crowd. Chances are if the bartender is dull and just performing their job the crowd will be the same. Yet, go into a bar where the bartender is alive, exciting and fun and you'll witness a whole new atmosphere. Just like any professional, a good bartender moves with confidence, looks sharp, and makes their job look easy. The basic fact is that bartenders make the party happen.
First, the basics of bartending include serving the drinks. Pouring shots, mixing a cocktail and popping the cap off a cold one are the obvious. Remembering all the drinks isn't hard. As with any alcohol serving establishment you will always have your regulars, who come in regularly and order the same thing%u2026regularly. It gets the point where the door opens; you recognize the face and have that drink waiting for your customer as they approach the bar. That's customer service.
Bartenders may also have to know a full menu (if you work as a bartender/server) and be able to take a customer orders during peek hours. Stock the bar and filling the ice bins as we go. Wash the glassware or use a commercial dish washer. If you have a barback, they can handle all of that for you.
The most important thing we need to do is take care of our customers. Face it, without the customers, we don't work. Unfortunately, bartenders are considered the jack of all trades and can get pulled all over the place. Bartenders are required to do everything behind the bar and sometimes other things. Even so, we still need to pay attention to our customers. Without them, we would only make minimum wage. If you can do that, then you'll be a GREAT bartender.
