- I would love to try Basa! Being from the Midwest, fishing and cooking just regular 'ole catfish (that really sometimes doesn't taste too good)....I thank you for this information, because I really did not know about the controversies. I will certainly have to look at what is offered in the store the next time I shop.....But again, most of us around my area don't buy fish, we eat only fish that we've caught ;)

- THANKS! I had no idea about 'basa' - I knew it as 'that white fish available at a good price at the local supermarket'. Our family's introduction to white fish was the basa. Thankyou for your lens, explaining about basa (and imitators) and sharing your recipes for using it (you should have double points for that). In our family we sometimes bake basa wrapped in basil leaves - delicious.

- Oh, I became allergic to seafood in my 30's (which is too bad, since growing up, we had fish on Fridays - catholic upbringing). I am very glad that you posted the information that "the EPA and FDA recommend that people not eat the same kind of fish more than once a week, to protect against excessive intake of mercury." This is especially important for pregnant women. Great lens Julie, keep 'em coming.
Stay well,

- I love Basa! Here in NOVA, we have international stores where I can get it fresh or frozen. I purchased 6 tremendous fillets yesterday, fresh-frozen for only $6.95. The whole bag weighed closed to five pounds. I deep fried three fillets last night for me and my housemate. I am siding with Vietnam in the catfish wars: I prefer to purchase fresh Basa fillets for $1.85 a pound, rather than farm-raised American catfish which even in the low-priced international stores, cost around $6.00 a pound!!

- I tried basa at a local diner in my town (Fort Pierce, FL). It was deep fried with a corn flake batter. OH MY GOODNESS! It was awesome! After about 3 years of eating it I finally asked where I could purchase it. I found out today that it sells at a local meat store. I purchased a whole case (which is a box of 23 large & meaty looking filets) for $29.99. That's almost $1 a filet! Think I'll have a fish fry.

- We have a restaurant called "Fatz" here in South Carolina that is serving a basa (grilled, panko-coated and fried, or blackened) that is delicious! It's light, flaky and takes the lemon or lime fiesta flavors of the seasonings so well. I am interested in buying it in the fish market here but they don't have it. I will try Publix but I hate to buy frozen fish!

- You have to try the basa it is the best tasting fish i have ever eaten. The good thing about it is that it does not smell or taste fishy. Make bowl out of foil paper for each piece of fish. Place fish on foil than add sliced white onions, diced fresh tomatoe, pepper, garlic & lemon spice, sweet basil, cayenne pepper if you like a bit of spice, two dabs of butter or margarine, 4 thin slices lemon, 4 thin slices lime, squeeze remaining lemon on fish ( it is almost impossible to put too much on ), and fresh parsley. Cover loosely put in oven on baking sheet at 350 for approximately 45 minutes. Note: although white fish is generally eaten with white wine try this with a merlot chilled with ice in it........IT IS OUT OF THIS WORLD! We could eat this fish every day of the week.

- Its available at Sam's club for $9.95 to two pounds individually vacuumed packed filets.
It is quite good and milder than talapia. I use Zaterains fish fry and canola oil to fry. I may kick the bucket but I alternate swai (basa) cod, flounder and talapia. I have a fish sandwitch each morning for breakfast.

- Love Basa ...discovered it 5yrs ago when I was living in NW Florida (Albertson's used to carry it). Moved to NM 4yrs ago had trouble finding it and then asked the butcher at the local market and he was able to order me a case. Keep it in the freezer all the time. My husband's favorite is when I season it with cajun spices, put steamed broc on filet, a piece of pepper jack cheese, roll up, place on foil , cover with peppers, onion, & garlic butter, seal foil, put on grill for about 20 min Yum !

- I've only been able to find Basa twice since I discovered your lens. It was really good and very inexpensive. We have a favorite Vietnamese restaurant in our neighborhood, but I don't see Basa on the menu. Will have to ask about that. We go for their vegetarian rolls and Pho (soup).

- Very interesting lens about basa fish. Didn't know that pengasius would be named basa. We find pengasius in all supermarkets here and I gave it a try when it first hit our stores and adopted it, as it's tasteful. Sadly, we find fresh fish in stores on Wednesdays and Thursdays; which implies that I can't eat as much fish as I'd like to.

- I was introduced to Basa about four years ago at a catered dinner party. It was love at first taste. I've been cooking it regularly ever since. Our supermarket sells it as is, or with a selection of spices or marinades. I take the lazy cook's approach and buy it already marinated and ready to cook.

- I eat it all the time and love it but what kind of basa(sutchi) fillets does Albertsons carry?
Depending on the type some Basa averages from 11.0 - 20.0 gr of protein so how can I find out what there's is to know how much protein i'm actually getting?

- I also have enjoyed my discovery of Basa. I salt and pepper a fillet, dredge in flour, then milk, then light breadcrumbs...saute in olive oil about five minutes on each side or until done...sprinkle with paprika and squeeze lemon over top. Also saute capers a few tsps of lemon and dredge over for that (piccata taste and look) wonderful.....

- I tried Basa at my parents house in florida and loved it. I came home to NY and couldnt find it anywhere until I found it in a fish store in Queens. We eat it all the time. I buy 15 lbs at a time and freeze it in my food saver bags. I make it fried but our favorite way is to make a mojito of garlic, salt, pepper, cumin and olive oil and lemon and broil it in the oven. It is the best!

- I cooked Basa today for the first time and it was the best tasting fish ive ever had!! I bought two fillets from my neighborhood Albertson. They were $3.99/lb... I seasoned them with Zatarans seasoning, lemon pepper, garlic powder, parsley flakes, italian seasoning and coated it with a little dijon mustard and I baked in oven for about 25 minutes.. It came out delicious.. perfectly golden and flaky. I would recommend this fish to anyone.

- Well Julie Jaguar you have taught me something today! Never heard of Basa. We usually eat fish a couple of times a week, but it's all fish that we catch from right here in St. Augustine. I will look at the Basa next time I go to Publix. I usually squint my eyes at fish from Asia but you've convinced me to take a look. You'd be a great investigative reporter. Wait, you already are!

- My husband discovered a few frozen Basa fillets yesterday afternoon as we shopped at a local supermarket. The name Basa we have never heard of before, but since we are seafood lovers, particularly of white fish, we decided to give it a try. We oven-fried it with spices and a very light coating of flour, and 'fried' on a shallow cookie sheet greased with olive oil. It was deliciously exquisite! We have fallen in love with the delicate taste of the Basa.
The frozen uncooked Basa fillets we purchased were white in color, kind of transparent at the edges. Thank you for the bountiful resources you have offered everyone within your site! Being from Western New York, most of the fish we can get is either frozen and/or very expensive.

- My wife and I love this fish. She kept coming home with it and I finally tried some. Now I can't get enough of it either. The guy down at the grocery store calls my wife "the basa lady" because she buys it so often. You don't have to "dress it up" at all. Basically, just cook and eat. The guy at the counter says he's having to order more and more so word must be getting around.

- Glad so many are getting used to Basa, if it is indeed the true Basa. It is a rather incredible and delicate fish. Introduced to it (and Swai or Tra) in the late 1960's, fresh from the southern Mekong (that little war they had). There is still a glut on the market, a holdover from 2008. Prices should remain low for the duration of 2009. Much that you see marketed is not the true Basa (Pangasius bocourti), but Swai or Tra (Pangasius hypophthalmus). The true Basa yields thicker fillets, is a bit finer in texture, and has a lighter white color. No real matter, as the Swai coming in is of very high quality and has been properly frozen. Just paid $4/lb in So. CA for 20 lbs of hard frozen Swai. Oh, and yes, both are a "type of catfish" generically called shark catfish. The similarity ends with the name. Beats even great Mississippi catfish by 3:1 in U. Miss. taste tests. Go for the Basa or Swai anytime you can.

- I just started eating it for a bodybuilding competition. Needed high protein and lower fat. Can't always eat salmon. Basa is excellent. So mild and delicious. All I do is spray the pan with no stick spray and then squeeze a lemon and use pepper. Bake at 400 for 11 minutes and done. no fishy smell. Just incredible. I already ate a fillet and I'm craving another.

- My family and I love Basa. We have been eating it since 2002. We found it in a local grocery store in the small town where we used to live. We were tired of talapia and the price of the Basa was better than any other fish we saw. When we moved to the Dallas/ Fort Worth area, we could not find it in any chain grocery store or any of the "organic" style stores. We finally found it in the "Hong Kong" Asian market, and are very happy we did!

- In fact, Basa, such as it is sold in grocery stores in Toronto (Ontario), is Tra. It is not the Pangasius bocourti. The flesh is firm, the taste is mild. It is rather cheap ($can 3/lb). Perfect for seafood soup i.e. Bouillabaisse or Cioppino, but it is not the real thing.

- Hi, Just read your page on Basa. I too had a problem getting Basa at Publix and got the same answer about lack of product. I don't know where you live, but I get all the Basa I want at "Safe Harbor Seafood" in Mayport Fl. They sell if for $5.50 a pound, But you can buy a 22 pound box frozen for $87.00 and it comes in 2 separate trays, so you don't have thaw it all at once.
My favorite way to cook Basa it to deep fry it in canola oil. I flour it, then egg wash, then use panko flakes. It is done in about 3 minutes with oil at 325. I also like it the way you cook it buy deep frying is a whole new texture and flavor. Try it.
Enjoyed reading your page. Thanks Pete --pedrodango@comcast.net

- I just moved to a foreign country and don't recognise any of the names. But I think I will purchase some sort of white fish and try your recipe with the ginger sauce. Yummy!!!!

- Hello I work for safeway and I manage the seafood department and we sell Basa for only 5.99 a pound but if you buy 2 or more pounds you can usually get a better deal. I love this fish and recommend it to all my customers that are wanting a mild fish like halibut in taste.

- I am going to Florida for the winter. I live in NJ and have basa at least 3-4 times a week. I love it so much and want to take it to Florida. Do you know of any place that sells Basa in the frozen bags with 4 filets.

- A question! I am dying to try basa this week (on sale at the local Safeway for 8.99 for 900g!), and I bookmarked your site for the wonderful recipes, but I was wondering if the fillets need to be thawed before cooking, and if so, what is the best method for thawing the fish? Thanks! Cassia

- Yes, I love the Basa fish, I melt some butter and coat the fish, put the fish in oval baking pans and sprinkle crushed Ritz crackers over it and add thyme, salt and pepper and I bake it at 350 for around 15 to 20 minutes... would like to know where I can purchase it in MA..
