Do You Often Have Cold Hands or Feet ?

The thyroid is responsible for the body's metabolism and thus, the production of body heat. Individuals who often report cold hands and feet for no apparent reason may suffer from hypothyroidism. One measure of thyroid performance can be checked routinely with an inexpensive instrument- already a household item or easily purchased from a local pharmacy- a Basal Thermometer. Although not the sole measurement of a thyroid issue, it is very useful.

Instructions:

1. Shake down a basal thermometer the night before and place on your nightstand. (You can also use a digital thermometer).

2. Directly upon awakening, place the thermometer snugly in your armpit for a period of 10 minutes and record your temperature for 5 days in a row. You must not get out of bed before checking your temperature or you will have an altered reading.

3. For women who are menustrating, the temperature should be taken starting on the 2nd day of menustration. This is the best time in a menstrual cycle to get an accurate basal temperature.

4. If your thyroid function is normal, your temperature should be in the range of 97.8-98.2 degrees Farenheit. A temperature below this may indicate a hypothyroid state.

5. If you are taking the temperatures orally, your temperature should should be in the range of 98.8-99.2 degrees Farenheit. A temperature below this may indicate a hypothyroid state.
