The Worst Things You Can Do to Your Baseball Glove

Ah, the feel of a brand-new baseball glove! The pebbled surface, that new leather smell. There's nothing like cradling the stiff new glove and thinking about the promise of the next big game. That feeling begins with your first tee ball game, and with any luck it will stay with you through college and beyond.

Vinci would like to share with you some tips on what and what not to do with your new baseball gloves!

What NOT To Do With Your New Baseball Glove!

Caring for your glove is a responsibility that shouldn't be taken lightly. Here are some ideas on what to do and what NOT to do:
  • Don't soak your glove. It's important to treat your glove with a substance that will soften the leather - and that substance should NOT be water. Leaving the glove in the rain, accidentally dropping it in the pool during a pick-up game, dropping the glove in the bathtub ... any prolonged contact with water will eventually harden and crack the leather.
  • Don't over treat your glove. Definitely treat the glove with some type of oil or cream, but don't overdo it. Lightly apply with a soft cloth, not a spatula.
  • Don't "bake" your glove or put it in the microwave - unless you want a unique entree for your next dinner party. Contrary to some opinions, warming up the leather in the oven doesn't encourage the softening agent to work better.
  • Bubble gum and baseball go together like peanut butter and jelly, but there are times when they can get too close. If the situation gets a little sticky, rely on a good old ice cube to freeze the gum off. Don't put the whole glove in the freezer: ice cold temperatures and glove leather don't mix.

What You SHOULD Do For Your New Baseball Glove

*Remember that glove leather is animal skin. Like all skin, it has pores that need to remain unclogged by dirt. This leads to our next suggestion:
  • Keep the glove as clean as you can. No, this doesn't mean scrubbing out each little stain; a little scruffiness adds character. But do wipe off excess dirt before it gets ground into the leather.
  • Tuck a ball into the glove each night and tie up the glove or put it under your mattress. This will help form the correct pocket in the glove.
  • Try to use your baseball glove as often as possible. Get out there and play! Don't think you can pay your little brother or sister to break in the glove for you, either. All you'll end up with is a glove that won't fit. You need to break it in personally so it becomes your own.

In Summary...

By following these guidelines, you should have years of fun with your baseball glove. You can enjoy caring for it as much as you enjoy playing with it.
