A brief timeline of baseball history.

- 1839: Abner Doubleday invents the game of baseball in Cooperstown, New York.
- 1845: The rules of baseball are developed by Alexander Joy Cartwright.
- 1846: The Knickerbockers and a group of cricket players play the first "official" game of baseball.
- 1867: The first (known) curveball in baseball is thrown by Candy Cummings.
- 1869: An all-professional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, takes the field for the first time.
- 1876: The National League is created.
- 1882: The American Baseball Association is established.
- 1889: The Players' League is created.
- 1900: The American League is created.
- 1903: The first World Series is played between the Boston Pilgrims and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1912: The first players' strike in Major League Baseball.
- 1913: The Federal League is established.
- 1918: The first time the "Star-Spangled Banner" is sung at a baseball game.
- 1920: Babe Ruth is sold to the New York Yankees.
- 1921: Baseball can be heard on radio for the first time.
- 1929: Babe Ruth hits his 500th career home run.
- 1930: Babe Ruth makes baseball history and signs a contract paying $80,000 a year.
- 1932: Lou Gehrig hits four home runs in one game.
- 1933: Major League Baseball's first All-Star game.
- 1935: First Major League Baseball's night game. Babe Ruth's career ends with him hitting three home runs in one game.
- 1936: The Baseball Hall of Fame inducts its first five players.
- 1941: Joe DiMaggio has a hit in 56 consecutive games.
- 1956: Don Larsen pitches the first perfect game in a World Series.
- 1973: The designated hitter rule is created.
- 1974: Babe Ruth's career home run record is broken by Hank Aaron.
- 1981: Baseball players strike for seven weeks.
- 1985: Pete Rose breaks Ty Cobb's all-time hit record.
- 1989: Pete Rose is banned from baseball for betting on the game.
- 1994: The longest and costliest strike in baseball history.
- 1995: Cal Ripken breaks Lou Gehrig's streak by playing 2,131 consecutive games.

- When the National League first started in 1876, pitchers had to pitch underhand and the batter could request a high or low pitch. Strikes only occurred if the batter swung and missed.
- In 1910 the cork center was added to the official baseball.
- Cal Ripken Jr., shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles didn't miss a game in 16 years.
- The American Baseball League was formed in 1882.
- In 1885 the baseball bat was allowed to have one flat side.
- In 1876 an umpire was allowed to asked spectators and players whether a catch had been fairly made if he did not see it himself.
- Previous to the 1931, fly balls that bounced over or through the outfield fence were considered home runs.
- The New York Yankees have won more World Series titles than any other team with 26.
- Barry Bonds holds the single-season home run record with 73.

- The Pitcher you are thinking of is Fernando Valenzuela, He pitched for the Dodgers from about 1980 through 1990.

- who was a national league pitcher (possibly Spanish descent) who rolled their eyes back in their head when they pitched? How long ago? Could have been anywhere from the 60s on... I remember watching the World Series with my grandmother and would like to know the answer. Thanks much!
