Basic Cakes: My Little Corner of the Internet

This lens is about my other hobby, running an online business called Basic Cakes.

Read on to discover how I came to this point, and I will try to share a little of my journey with you.

*Update: Due to the slow economy, and my husband's shoulder injury, we lost a major portion of our income. I had to go to work outside the home full time and take down the website for now. I hope to have it back up one day, but right now I just don't have the extra time it takes to maintain it. So I guess you could say that this lens is now a Memorial of sorts, remembering all the hard work and learning that took place for me to have a website. It was a lot of fun. The time has not been wasted, because I have learned a lot about putting a website together, and I hope to use that knowledge again in the near future.*

A Little About Basic Cakes

Basic Cakes is a website that specializes in cake kits for birthdays, baby showers, and other occasions.

I have also started stocking a few party supplies and favors, as well as a Gift Shop category featuring handmade bookmarks and cell phone charms.

I will be adding more items each week, so the site will be expanding quite a bit over time.

I Had a Lot of Help Getting Started!

I started the Basic Cakes website early this year, with very little knowledge of how to go about it in the beginning.

I found this great forum online, called Creative Shop Talk, that allowed me to ask all my questions and there was always someone there with an answer. If it weren't for Alana, the forum owner, and all the other great people involved in this forum, I probably wouldn't have my site up and running yet.

The motto of CST is website owners helping other website owners, one step at a time.

Sometimes It Takes a Lot of Trial and Error!

I went through 3 different shopping carts before I finally found one I really like. My first cart was a Cre-loaded cart, then I had a zen cart, and now I have a Candy Press cart. This has all been in the space of about 6 months.

I am not knocking these other carts, so if you use one of those carts that is great! The Candy Press just fits my needs better right now. I believe everyone should choose the best cart for their business needs.
