Pronouncing Chinese Words

The aim of this lens is to teach you some basic Chinese Mandarin words, and how they are pronounced.

I'll be listing the words I have learnt as a beginner, and how I remember the pronounciations (as a native English speaker). Correct pronounciation is particularly hard with Chinese, as the tone of voice a word is spoken in, totally changes its meaning of the word!

There are 2 types of 'Chinese': Mandarin which is most widely spoken, and Cantonese which is spoken in regions like Hong Kong. This lens will focus on learning to speak Mandarin.

Food Items

How to pronounce types of food

Some of the first and easiest, words I learnt in Chinese.

For each word, the English is listed first, then the word in 'PinYin', and finally, how I pronounce it correctly. Rest assured - these pronounciations have been understood here in China, and checked out by my Chinese partner.
  1. Apple = Pinguo [Say 'ping - guoh']
  2. Banana = Xianjiao [Say 'see-arn jee-oh', with dashed parts said quickly]
  3. Bread = Mianbao [Say 'me-an bo']
  4. Milk = Nai [Say 'ni-' as in 'Night']
  5. Tea = Cha [Say 'char']
  6. Pear = Li [Say 'Lee', at a low pitch, keeping short]

Thanks Anna, I'm just getting back to work on this now.

Oh, I've ordered your book about your trip to Mongolia today. I met someone out in China who was an American girl my age. She'd also been on a motorbike trip across Outer Mongolia and told me it was the best experience ever. I'd seen your book advertised before, so decided to read about your story...I'm overdue a book to read, and I'm wondering if there's much in common between there and where I went.
