The Techniques

Our WigJig University wire-working technique for this lens is the basic technique of using a WigJig to make wire components. Here are some basic tips that may be review for many readers.
First, always start by cutting the wire to the length you need then straightening the wire. Any imperfections in the wire when you start, will be imperfections in the finished product. I personally pull the wire I am about to use through the jaws of my nylon jaw pliers several times to get it straight. It is easier to straighten the wire if you put a loop in the end first, then pull the wire by holding onto this loop.

Second, keep the wire straight as you are wrapping it around the pegs. I have tried doing this several ways and find that the way that works best for me is to hold the wire straight in my dominant hand while I turn the jig with my non-dominant hand. To do this easily, it helps to position your jig on a smooth, somewhat slippery surface as you wrap your wire around the pegs. This allows the jig to slide as you move it. Concentrate on keeping the wire straight as you work.

Third, always plan on throwing away the first two to three of any wire component that you make. Use practice wire and really practice. Try different approaches with your practice wire to see what works best for you. After you are comfortable making the piece in inexpensive wire, then graduate to your good stuff.

Through using these three simple steps -- straighten the wire before your start, keep the wire straight as you work by moving the jig and holding the wire, and practice with inexpensive wire until you get it right -- you should find that making wire components is relatively easy.
