Basic Kitchen Supplies - Kitchen Supply List
Ranked #3,375 in Food & Cooking, #64,871 overall
The Basic Kitchen
Every Kitchen needs a basic set of tools or supplies to function. With all the cooking shows on TV like Hells Kitchen and more many people are getting back into cooking or new to cooking these basic kitchen supplies or kitchen gadgets are essential. You may have just moved and want a list of basic kitchen tools or may have just got married. Below is a list that will help you get started. Many of these items make great wedding gifts or house warming gifts.
Pots and Pans

Pots and pans are the core of any kitchen. A matched set is recommended and you usually get several different sizes that will help with all you cooking needs. I recommend non-stick or Teflon coated if taken care of and washed properly by hand you should get several years heavy duty use. This is one of your best investments so pick a quality set. With a quality set you get what you pay for do not go cheat in this area!
Measuring Cups
Measuring cups are essential for cooking that perfect recipe, cooking rice or noodles, baking and following diets. Clear measuring cups are my favorite. They are easier to read than metal creating less errors when cooking. You could purchase plastic but glass is stain and odor free. It is suggested you have at least 2-3 measuring cups. A 4 cup, 2 cup and 1 cup measuring cup are ideal for most home cooking.
Measuring Spoons
Measuring spoons will be used for measuring spices, herbs, flour and condiments that are added to recipes dishes and drinks such as smoothies or any type of mixed or blended drink. I even suggest two sets if your budget allows. A basic set will consist of the following 1 tablespoon, 1 teaspoon, 1/2 teaspoon and 1/4 teaspoon.
Knife Set
A good knife set is in order for all you cutting, chopping, hacking and slicing needs. A serrated knife set is real nice they just never seem to get dull. I have had a set that included steak knives for over 15 years and they still cut just as well as when they were new. You never need to sharpen them which is a nice bonus.
Kitchen Utensils
You basic kitchen utensils should be plastic if you use non-stick cookware to avoid scratching those pots and pans. The very basic utensils should be a ladle, basting spoon which also works as a serving spoon, a slotted spoon and a spatula.
Rubber spatulas are also a nice addition for scraping stuff like mayonnaise or other condiments out of jars. They are also used for scraping pastry, cookie dough or other sticky mixtures out of mixing bowls.

Mixing Bowls
Mixing bowls are a must. They also serve as serving bowls for mealtime. I suggest 3-5 bowls. A set will usually consist of 3-4 bowls and then I would highly suggest a very large mixing bowl for salad or for taking cooked meals to say a pot luck.
Mixing bowls that come with lids are great for storing in the fridge or taking to that family picnic.

Cutting Boards
Cutting boards come in many styles and materials. I suggest the hard white poly / plastic type. I highly suggest 2 cutting boards because if your cutting meat then veggies it is just much easier to not have to wash one when doing one meal when you are in a hurry and you avoid cross contamination.
I really like the cutting boards that have a shallow rim around the edge that way liquids from meat or other cut products are less likely to run on to the counter top making less mess.

Graters
Graters are a must for a kitchen. If you need orange rind grated or fresh ginger or grated lemon peel you have your grater handy to complete the recipe.
Graters are also great for making you own hash browns or grating cabbage for cole slaw. If you need to ad some color to a salad then grated purple cabbage or carrots will do it.
What I use a grater for most of the time is for grating cheeses for many dishes. A box greater offers several different grating sizes. A box grater is just a great all around kitchen tool to have in you arsenal of must have basic kitchen tools.

Peelers
Every kitchen needs a peeler. Potato's and carrots give a peeler most of it use. They are so often used for peeling potato's that they are often referred to as a potato peeler. You can use a paring knife for peeling but it is just so much simpler to use a peeler and usually a lot less waste.
Colanders
Colanders are used for draining pasta, washing lettuce and other fresh produce. I recommend a metal colander in emergencies I have used my metal colander as a steamer!
Spice and Herb Rack
To start out some really great cooking and home recipes a spice rack is a must. I suggest buying a rack that already has a collection of herbs and spices that usually have a good selection of your basic herbs and spice.
A spice rack is often stocked with herbs and are much much cheaper than going out and purchasing the spices and herbs individually. Most people want to have a list of kitchen basic spices and buying those spices individually can be quite expensive so if you buy a spice rack that already has the spices you get them for a fraction of the cost.

Cooking Thermometers
Cooking thermometers help you determine if your meat such as a roast, turkey, chicken or any poultry, beef, pork product is cooked to the right temperature internally. Cooking times may vary and by having a cooking thermometer you can make sure you are following safe cooking practices for meat products.
A cooking thermometer is also handy for baking products such as cakes, candies, caramels and many recipes that need careful monitoring or the temperature during certain stages of cooking.

Cook Books
Any decent kitchen will have a cookbook or two. A good cookbook will give you more than recipes. It will also give you guidelines on how to cook basic food items or how to even cut up a chicken or make broth. There is only one cookbook I can recommend I have grown up with it since I could cook. The cookbook is listed below. Get the spiral bound edition it lays flat open so it is easy to reap as you follow the recipe.
