Prayer - A Natural Expression of Our Love for God

Prayer is the easiest way for us to communicate with God. Yet we often make it far more difficult than it really is. It should come very naturally. We talk to people every day and speaking to God should be easy and natural.

God loves us. He is deeply interested in everything we do. He wants us to talk to Him and share all those thoughts and feelings which we experience every day.

It is true that God is all knowing and knows what we will say before we say it, but He doesn't want to just read our minds. He wants us to speak to Him and rely on Him.

How to Pray - The Lords Prayer

Jesus gave the disciples an example of the sort of things we should be saying when we pray. It is the perfect example of prayer, and it will never be bettered, because it was given by the Lord Himself.

Our Father who is in heaven
Hollowed be Your name
Your kingdom come
Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven
Give us each day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us
And lead us from temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Yours is the kingdom the power and the glory
For ever and ever
Amen

We do not need to say the prayer word for word, but it can be used as the perfect model for our prayers

How to Pray - Praying on You Fingers

Another useful aid to prayer is using the fingers of one hand as a reminder of the things that we should be praying for.

Thumb - This is the most important "finger" and so reminds us that we should start with that which is most important; God. We should start by praising God, just as the Lords prayer does.

Pointing finger - This finger should point directly to ourselves. We should confess those things which we have done wrong and ask God for forgiveness and for help to live according to His will.

Long finger - This represents the long list of things that we should be thankful for. We should always thank God for what He does for us.

Ring finger - Represents other people. We need to pray for other people.

Little finger - This is where we can ask for things for ourselves.

When To Pray

It is possible to pray at any time.

Although the advice above can help you pray a structured prayer, praying also can be very unstructured. You can literally talk to God about anything at any time.

Some prayers can be very short. For instance if my wife is about to drive somewhere I will often pray; "Lord please protect her and keep her safe."
Other times I might pray a blessing on somebody I just met, or I might pray for something for myself; "Lord, please let us have fine weather for our day out tomorrow"

Other times I might pray for a lot longer. For instance when I have a quiet time with God.

The apostle Paul suggests that we should pray without ceasing. That doesn't mean that we pray forever and do nothing else, but it does mean that we should be walking with God and involving Him in everything that we do.

It is fine to talk to God about your car, your computer and any other mundane thing that you think God wouldn't be interested in.

God Is Interested!
Important!

God is Interested in You

Make your life a life of prayer. Speak to God about everything. He will never get tired of hearing from you.

Prayer Requests

We all have things which we would like people to pray for. Add you request hear so that others can pray for you, and please pray for others that have left requests here.

Once again, you can feel free to pray for me anytime at all according to the spirit. Please pray for the right job for my son and that he receives strong encouragement, thank you!

A beautiful lens. My prayer request would be one of thanksgiving for all the blessings we receive daily-----all of us together sending a huge "thank You" to the Lord.

I love this. I've never heard of "praying on your fingers." I do love the comparison of the thumb to putting God first and the long finger to remember to be grateful for our many blessing!

Hi, my name is Chelsea Ojeda. I am currently in the midst of a divorce. We have a 4 1/2 month old son. My Husband recently accepted Jesus as his Savior after that Satan came in and attacked our family, so here we are now. There is space for reconciliation. If you could please keep us in your prayers we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Great lens, I love it! Prayer is one way of communicating with God....reading my Bible is another way for me.

Great lens. Gave it a thumbs up. I also enjoy praying to our Heavenly Father. Some are formal prayers on my knees, but I also pray as I work, walk and wherever I am at. Jesus is my near and dear Companion.

Great lens 5 stars and adding you to the discovery tool of my In the Beginning page. On of my frequent prayers is "What now Lord?" When trying to figure out what to do next.

This is a very powerful lens. I especially love the example of using your fingers to remember the "necessary" parts of our prayer lives. I had never heard that before, but I will certainly remember it from now on. I especially love that the "pinky finger" is used to represent our own needs. When we look around the world, most (although not all of us) will find millions of people who are suffering worse than we. Using the little finger to pray for ourselves should help us focus on that. 5*
