Who is at risk?

Early research suggested that basilar migraine was most often in young women. Recent statistical analysis has shown that the basilar migraine affects all age groups and both male and female. However, basilar migraine, like other forms of migraine is more common in women. That is about three times as many female as male patients.

Symptoms

The symptoms of BTM is usually occur suddenly and are associated with the inability to speak properly, ringing in the ears, he and vomiting. This called the aura phase, where victims can experience cognitive problems. This phase usually lasts one hour and can be frightening because of dizziness and loss of control.

Other symptoms:

Double Vision

double visionDouble vision, also known as diplopia, is the simultaneous perception of two images of a single object.

Balance Disorder

balance disorder

Balance disorder is a disturbance that causes an individual to feel unstable, as when standing or walking. It may be accompanied by symptoms of being dizzy, woozy, or have a sensation of movement, spinning, or floating.

Vomiting

vomiting

Vomiting (usually called throwing up) is the forcible expulsion of stomach contents through the mouth and sometimes the nose. Vomiting can occur due to a variety of conditions.

Diarrhea

toilet flush

Diarrhea describes the stool (feces) that are soft and watery. It is very common and usually not serious. Many people have diarrhea once or twice a year. It usually lasts two to three days and can be treated with prescription drugs.

Loss of consciousness

loss of consciousness

Loss of consciousness is the condition of being unaware of a mental condition that involves the complete absence or substantially complete sensitivity to people and other environmental stimuli. Being in a comatose state or coma is a type of loss of consciousness. Fainting due to a decrease in blood pressure and reduced oxygen supply to the brain is a temporary loss of consciousness. Loss of consciousness should not be confused with altered states of consciousness such as delirium, normal sleep, hypnosis, and other states altered consciousness in which the person responds to stimuli.

Intense Headache

headacheHeadache is pain in the head or upper neck. Headaches have many causes, so many people suffer from headaches that's because the treatment is sometimes difficult.

Slurred speech

Slurred speech is a phenomenon that happens when the syllables of common words are slurred together. It is almost always present in everyday language, in all natural languages, but not in some constructed languages, such as Loglan or Lojban, which are designed so that all words are parsed.

Vision loss

Any type of vision loss (eg blindness, blurred vision, double vision, etc.) is a symptom of great concern. Many cases are very serious medical conditions. Certain types of vision changes can be a medical emergency where delay can lead to loss of sight (eg for causes such as glaucoma, eye injury, retinal detachment) or loss of life (by eg for causes such as stroke, TIA, etc.).

What's the cause?

Previously it was thought that the Basilar Migraine started in the basilar artery (one of the arteries supplying the brain with blood) is started. Now the researchers are more likely to neuronal cases (the chemicals send messages throughout the brain), but like other migraines, are the specifics of what is taking place still something of a mystery.

Cheese and wine (found mainly in meat and meat products) frequent trigger foods, and additives such as nitrite. It may be helpful to keep a food dairy products and take note of the foods you eat to trigger the identity.

Treatment

Unfortunately, rare diseases have not always received much interest and research ; and Basilar Migraine is a rare disease. The treatment is similar treatment to other migraine.

Medications include beta blockers, anti-epileptics, calcium channel blockers, anti-depressants, pr over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen (paracetamol)

Advice for Sufferers

  1. Lie down in a dark, quiet room during the aura phase. You can also try to soothe a cold damp cloth on the forehead, the throbbing headache.
  2. Avoid or limit your alcohol consumption as BTM can be worsened by alcohol consumption
  3. Cigarette use, or oral contraception in addition to BTM You can get a higher risk for stroke that is why it makes sense to stop both if you are a sufferer.

How you can be treated?

  1. biofeedback is one of the alternative treatments for BTM proposed. It measures the internal processes in the body so that you can actively heal yourself. The evidence is still largely incomplete, but it may be worth a try if you're looking for help.
  2. always consult with a physician. Doctors are concerned because symptoms are about the same as BTM serious diseases. There is also concern that those with the BTM may be at increased risk of stroke are. Frequent and intense basilar migraine may require consultation with a neurologist.

However, BTM is rare, and even if you get the symptoms, do not panic. But make sure you see a doctor immediately to ensure that you will keep risk as low as possible.

Topamax is great if one isn't having kids. It greatly reduced the pain but not the auras. And as for appetite, when this type of migraine makes a person too sick to eat, a pill that kills the appetite doesn't help. I look like living death. However, I'm not wondering how to remove my head each day so try Topamax.

This is not common information about migraine. This can be helpful for people who are suffering migraines and who doesn’t have a single idea that they might be having a basilar migraine.

I agree with you it sucks! This information though is better than what it used to be. I have went to doctors that have never heard of it. I apparently was born with BTM, it was not until I was 16 that was finally diagnosed with it, I am now 42.
